Hey all new guy here.

Bought a Harmon kardon avr 154 a few years ago and have been happy enough with it. However, now that I'm trying to use it with additional HDMi sources like a chrome cast or computer HDMi output, I'm remembering that it doesn't accept audio over HDMi. Grrrr...

Any recommendations for a similarly priced receiver that does?? I don't need anything fancy or high powered or impressive THD specs, I'm just looking for a basic 5.1 reciever with a few HDMi inputs (with audio) and a few other stereo inputs for my turntable and another accessory or two.

Thanks!!
Geoff

Well. A little googling has revealed that there are such things as HDMI audio extractors.... I had no idea, but it sounds like a cheaper solution than. New reciever!

If you do decide to go with a new receiver and not looking for all the high end fancy capability, I highly recommend the Yamaha RX-V477 5.1 receiver.

There are several to choose from in this link http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/av-receivers-amps/rx/rx-v477_black_u/

I am partial to the 477 only because I have one. Not sure how much your current receiver goes for but I believe the 477 goes for around $350 on avg.

Just a thought..

Thanks Timmy - if I do end up replacing the reciever I'll have a look at that one.

As I remember the avr 154 was pretty inexpensive, I think less than $200, but it's been a few years too.

Maybe that's why I got a good deal on mine? Not a current model or something.... I'm pretty sure there's no way to get audio from the HDMi inputs. My only audio in options with HDMI selected are the digital audio or the optical inputs.

Yes, your AVR has HDMI pass through. All modern AVR have HDMI repeating, which is what allows audio off the HDMI. If you had bought a higher up HK from then, instead of that one, you'd have audio off HDMI.

All the manufacturers stopped building pass through 7 years ago.

So with all this in mind, I think the easiest thing for me to do is get an HDMI audio extractor device from eBay or Amazon or wherever. Any recommendations?

When using the HDMI inputs for video, the only audio inputs available on my Avr 154 are digital: either coax or optical, so I'll need something that has a digital output rather than analog.

Thanks again guys and girls :)

Monoprice has a few. Read the fine print. Not all of them preserve 5.1 on the digital output. You will end up getting an HDMI switch, and not even using the HDMI switching in the AVR.
