So...at the risk of sounding stupid; I admit I really have never bothered reading about OLED, what makes this technology so expensive?

1. New
2. High initial failure rate

Which the failure rate is coming down. Any new tech starts with a high failure rate.

OLED, eventually, should be as good as the best plasma.

Videophiles are hedging their bets on OLED.

True. But until that day happens you can enjoy terrific looking LCD without guilt. Let those with more money than sense be the pioneers with arrows in their backs.

Actually since there is almost zero content to begin with I question why anyone is spending serious $$$ on 4k when you could save up and buy better sets when there is content worthy of it. And that position has been set for 3 years now. Imagine you bought a 4k set in 2012 and have had at most a hard disk with a dozen movies on it for most of that time and a sliver of streams off of Netflix for a half a year at most. That doesn't sound like good value for your money to me. How much better are 2015 sets than 2012 ones? A LOT.
