Well, first word has started to come out about the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music (my all time favorite movie)for release in March of 2015 (at least overseas). Here is a picture of the cover of the steelbook, which is the same as the regular edition:

http://www.steelbookbluray.com/2014/12/the-sound-of-music-is-getting-a-50th-anniversary-steelbook-release-in-march/

The only new feature I have hard of is a new 1 hour documentary on Julie Andrews return to Austria. Personally, I was really hoping and praying for a 3D conversion. I have nothing against movies being converted as long as we are given the original version. I was thinking all year, wow, if any movie in the Fox library would be incredible to convert to 3D it would be this one. Look at that cinematography, its as if many of the scenes were already plabnned for 3d. The opening scene, Julie and the kids coming up the stairs at the end of Do Re Mi, all of the beautiful backgrounds. With this announcement of a regular 50th anniversary blu-ray I think my dream will not come true though we have all year. I am sure there would be alot of debate on this, but being my all-time favorite movie, I would welcome a 3D conversion if it were done by experts like those who did The Wizard of Oz and Titanic.

In any case, I at least hope that Fox fixes the awful color mistakes they made on the first blu-ray. Take a look at the new covers in the link above, this is the correct color of Julie Andrews hair for the film. In 2 of her books and several interviews, she discussed having her hair dyed blond and mentioned she almost fainted when she saw how light it is. Now take a look at the Blu-ray at the very start of Do Re Mi or the My Favorite Things scene. It's a red color. There are also major tours for the 50th anniversary, like these:

or one in the USA at the Trapp lodge:

.

If anyone comes across anything about the 50th anniversary of the film, please post it here.

I really can't see this film being in 3-D. I've see this films many times in first run and the colors look fine to me. Don't mess with this classic.

To each their own. No one is more faithful to subscribing to the notion of giving us the original in the way it was presented, but I would really love to see this in 3D.

I don't understand how you can say that about the color scheme if you have seen this first run so many times. Take a look at the 40th anniversary DVD if you have it, and see what was done to the 45th anniversary, rooms have changed color, people's hair, even their clothing. But my biggest proof comes in Julie Andrews hair. It's supposed to be light blond. It was in all editions until the 45th, and even in these new covers for the 50th, her hair is very blond. I can't stand the red hair she has in the 45th. I agree with you let this classic alone, but it wasn't left alone, it was altered. The clarity of the 45th transfer is just stunning, but I know of major fans of this movie from The Sound of Music fan club, some are projectionists who are sticking to their 40th DVD.

I don't know why Fox would put those photos on the cover of a movie and then have different tones on the film. My only thought is that perhaps they have corrected it.

I hope we'll see the A&E documentary "The Von Trapp Family: Harmony and Discord" returned as it was strangely dropped after the 40th anniversary.

The 45th Anniversary box set has finally disappeared from Costco so chances are there will be a 50th Anniversary set with Julie and the "kids" plugging it on Good Morming America but honestly I think the only way to honor the film is to put it back in theaters for a run. Unfortumetely the Sing A Long thing has become so popular I fear the only way it will be in theaters is with the Sing A Long titles and people singing in the theaters. It would probably be a Fathom event. Why not include the original German film that was the basis for the Broadway musical. Clips from this film were included in earlier video releases.

I couldn't agree more, they have never included the German film and I would love to see it. They also have many of the auditions which I've seen on some other video tapes in the past. But the highlight for me would be to see this in the theater again, but I have already seen the singalong twice and would just love to go and see it without the singalong. One or two showings on a special day at an IMAX would be a dream come true!

It would be great to have it back in theatres in TODD-AO with 6 Track Stereo Datasat Audio as some cinemas have had
70mm put back for Interstellar, but I bet if it does it will be DCP Sing A Long.

I ran the German film ("The Trapp Family") about a year before The Sound of Music was released. It was quite good and a bit surprising that they would have made it.

SoM benefited greatly from the changes made by Ernest Lehman who followed The Trapp Family. Much better than the original play version.

It is being remounted for the stage in 2015 and they are promising a new version. It will be interested how it compares to the original play and the film version.

That cover art looks really refreshing to me. I was getting a bit sick of the "Julie in mid-meadow twirl" which has become the standard art for a few reissues now.
I agree as well, but this cover art is too reminiscent of PETER PAN. I don't understand why they can't use the original artwork and title font which was so iconic throughout its entire theatrical heyday.

I agree the original font would be better. And truth be told, I'm tired of the "blue" theme given the artwork the past few releases. For a film that has precious little blue in it, I think the original artwork color scheme works much better. And is warmer to boot.

Good advertising poster art has become a lost art. The original artwork (moreso than merely the original concept which is what this new art depicts) with the artistry and color of the original posters and the musical notes springing out of the title font was iconic back in the sixties and seventies. Along with Gone With the Wind's 1967 artwork, My Fair Lady's adwork, Doctor Zhivago's original ad and so many other posters from the sixties. Along with the great posters of the thirties and forties, and yet in a completely different style, these posters spelled class and told you that you were going to see something very special. I miss them and wish their artistry would be retained for use in the digital era.

Here is a video review of The Music Man in which the reviewer states that Julie's stand-in, Lari Thomas, was actually in the long shot on the hill at the beginning. Absolutely false! Skip to 6:25. (However, I do believe it is Lari who does Mary Poppins' flight and landing in front of the Banks' house,as insurance wouldn't allow the star to do that stunt.)

Yes, I loved the original poster font for The Sound of Music, and have missed seeing it used in anything since the laserdisc big box.

However, Julie Andrews does tell a story about doing the landing and how it was the last thing they filmed in case there was a problem and the guy at the other end of the wire made a mistake and she dropped down quite hard. (She told this story on a talk show recently celebrating the 50th anniversary of the film.) So, not sure which is true.
