Well the day after Christmas is when my Criterion-made copy of Tootsie arrived in the mail. We had our showing the very next night and in fact Kyrsten wants to run it again on Sunday (after football of course):

Viewed On: Vizio E-Series 70" using Sony BDP-S590 Blu-ray player. (Note the old sound system is still used for this one as I hadn't yet installed the new AVR/Speakers).

I remember seeing this film in theaters upon its release in 1982 and I was not to be disappointed, either then or upon viewing this magnificent Blu-ray release (what, 32 years after theatrical release). First thing that jumps out, the early 1980s feather-based hairstyles, including Dustin Hoffman's feathered "Rick Springfield" hair style.
Oh and I reserved special praise for Teri Garr who earned my respect, admiration and a big crush ever since her Roberta Lincoln role in the Star Trek TOS episode "Assignment Earth". That and Teri's J-Lo Class Ass (or nowadays a Kim Kardashian Klass Keester) never fails to get my heart a goin.

This was also my first real exposure to a Sydney Pollack film and he won my admiration as an actor back in 1982 with this film. I really enjoyed his character as a successful agent and high class gentleman.

Oh did I mention Geena Davis in her first major film. Small role but we defintely got a real eyeful of this beauty in her youth pre-Thelma & Louise.

Overall for me a fantastic Blu-ray purchase I could strongly recommend as a nice addition to your Blu-ray collection.

Technical Aspects: PQ on this release right up there with the usual Criterion standard (and for $29.25 total it better be. Oh I did get a $0.38 Amazon discount, whoopee). It looked great on the 70 from a range of only about 8 feet. A touch of grain noticeable at that range but Criterion definitely did not go big on DNR which most HTF folks find desirable. Sound quality on my ancient Aiwa setup sounded quite nice. Can't wait to hear this on the new sound system but I'd welcome input here from our resident HTF audiophiles.

I appreciate a thorough disc review, but this seems beneath you (and this site, IMHO):

That, combined with this about Geena Davis in her underwear:
Small role but we defintely got a real eyeful of this beauty in her youth pre-Thelma & Louise.
...Makes me wonder if you got the movie's point at all.

But I'll let Dustin speak for me.

I believe this site has reviewers. I don't mind someone's thoughts - we all do that, but laying out thoughts in this format, as if it WAS a revue is more than a little odd. And yes, the personal comments about what gets his heart going are, well, TMI and I'll leave it at that.

Only the OP has any possible clue what joke he was making with the "Oops, '28!" joke in the header  , but I'm taking a wild stab in the dark and guessing that yes, it DOES have more of a 30's-screwball throwback quality to it than any 70's-80's comedy that ever intentionally tried to homage the great days of Cary Grant or Carole Lombard.
If I wasn't close, I'll at least throw that in there.

It was a typo that I just decided to leave for comic effect. No throwback to any 1920s-1930s films intended.

I'm considering deleting this thread as it seem someone is offended. Cripes!!!

No, just that he was taking the movie a little TOO seriously, which...one probably shouldn't do.

However, we do have more professional reviews on the site, and this one seemed a little too fanboy without getting to the movie or the disk.
(Yes, we know Teri Garr is in it, without the need for a large tribute graphic.)

I don't see what the problem is. Not the first or last time someone offered an opinion on a beautiful woman around here. Also thorough reviews are welcome by me.

Am I offended by the ass comment? No.Does it belong in relation to the movie Tootsie? No.Hypocrisy? No.Tootsie was ground breaking. Sure the motive "for" the movie is different than the motive "in" the movie. But if seeing women as objects, as clearly pointed out by "the ass"...Then the movie made its point for...and in, the movie.

Well then we'd better get rid of those "Tribute to...put favorite hair color here" threads. BTW, the title of this thread doesn't mention review, in fact it seems a bit lighthearted to me. Didn't come into this expecting more than the OPs thoughts about the film.

I didn't say get rid of the Tribute threads. My GF told me long ago(we've known each other 30 years)..."There is always a time to be objectified. Unless you are a porn star...it isn't when you are earning your living"(She said that at the tender age of 16. I, 17. We were working a summer job at a car wash...and she was wet...and I wasn't the only one staring)

The objectification of women which is the focal theme of "Tootsie" has been going on for centuries and won't be made any better or worse by the tone of this thread...which I happen to appreciate, BTW...those of us who still appreciate the appearance of an attractive female are going to speak out about it and it seems appropriate here. If anything, it shows how far society still has to go in appreciating people's non-physical attributes, both male and female...just my personal observation!!! ;)

It's just gross. The review is already shallow and pointless, basically amounting to:

1) I like the movie
2) lol 80's
3) how about that Sydney Pollack, right guys?

Really, half of the review consists of comments about which women and their body parts get his "heart a goin". Gross. Keep it in your "briefs".

But as others have pointed out, sexism and objectification happen all the time around here. It certainly isn't the first time I've noticed it.

If that was a prerequisite for not stating opinions here then I'm afraid just about all of us would be guilty of such, one time or another. Again, if this thread offends some of you that much then why post in it, thus refreshing additional looks at it.

+1 I know I'm guilty of such behavior.

Or...how about adding some weight to the thread by posting their own observations about the disc...sending this discussion in the right direction (the Criterion release) rather than the wrong direction (the efficacy of the OP).
