Several years ago I started buying DVD Music albums. The sound is terrific and totally walks away from CD or any other music source. I use an Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" Hotel California cut to blow people away, but I don't see them around as much. Is this a dead mode?

Pretty much. Although "neither won"...SACD are more common and(last I checked) still made.The "new" format is BD-Audio. BD-Audio is the same "core" as DVD-A and Dolby True HD.
