The setup is a Yamaha RX-A2010 AV receiver (7 x 140 watts), Tivo Roamio Plus, Samsung 8550 (65" 4K), 5 Martin Logan Speakers (SL3, Motion 15, Motion 30) and a Monster sub. HDMI is being used to connect the Tivo to the Yamaha.

The problem is that watching movies on the Tivo requires the Yamaha volume to be cranked up excessively -5 to the point where I am concerned about cooling problems during a 90 minute movie.

I'm assuming you calibrated the speakers? If so, -5 should equal roughly 70 db (or 80 depending on how it was done). That is still below reference level (although it should be quite loud) and would not be an issue for the receiver.

How big is the room?My NR1008 is often at -10 for movies driving nine 92db BIC V series speakers. The room is 22x28. So. -5 is not out of the ordinary.Your main are 89db, the rest are 91/92. Based on "typical layout"(meaning, usually wrong) you are twice as far from the SL3/30 as you are from the 15. Meaning the double the power the SL3 would need correctly set up, now need 4 times the power.

With other sources -5 is allot of volume. We sit about ten feet from the main speakers and the speakers were manually calibrated. -5 is where is set as the max limit. The Martin Logan SL3s are pretty efficient. Is it possible to loose audio signal strength using HDMI? Would optical for that input be better?

No, you won't lose strength - either you have a good signal or you don't. No in between.

I'm not familiar with the Romio - I haven't had a working TIVO in a few years. Make sure you are passing 5.1 digital signal to the AVR.

Also, you may have some other sound preset on your AVR (like Dolby PL II or similar) that is causing the volume to be lower.

What are the other sources? And, the 2010 should have individual input gain control (so that all connected devices are the same "level" before you even turn up, or down, the main volume).

There are no gain settings for individual inputs, just a universal start volume and a max. Sound does have settings for Dynamic Range (Standard, Min/Auto, Max), Pure Direct Mode, and Adaptive DSP Level.

Decoder is set to Dolby movie mode and auto detect.

Best Buy guy tried to tell me that $80 HDMI cables gave better picture. When I told him HDMI was digital and that zeros and ones were not affected by interference / shielding issues, he backed it off to say that the expensive HDMI cables gave better audio. Like people could hear the difference with most setups.

I find it hard to believe Yammy didn't include input specific control gain on each one. My SR707 Onkyo has that, and so did my last Yamaha, HTR 6180(6080, don't remember).

It was just out of warranty and I went with the Yamaha because the board with install was pricey. The quote was $400. I had the earlier model Onkyo with component video inputs prior to upgrading to the HDMI version and liked both of them. Lots of power.

The Yamaha 2010 is no slouch. I'm just concerned about cranking it up so much for movies.
