I am throwing myself at the mercy of the HTF collective. I've got a situation here where I thought I had figured out a solution but have not met with success:

Prior situation:

Blu-Ray player: Samsumg Model #BD-D5700, model Code BD-D5700/ZA
Video Output included HDMI
Audio Output included RCA? (Yellow for video, Red and White for Audio.

Television: HDTV: Mitsubishi 46in WS=48413.
Video Inputs include S-video or RCA? (Yellow, Red and White) Component Video (Red Green and Blue) DTV on Monitor Link (MonLink) Unfortunately, it does not include HDMI.

So, here is how I had it set up. I had a converter that would take the video input from the HDMI and convert it to the MonLink for video. For the Audio, I used BlueJean Red and White cables to connect the BluRay player to the HDTV. This all worked fine.

Current Situation:

The disc tray on the BluRay player stopped working. The unit thought it was opening the tray, but the tray wasn't opening or closing. After going back and forth with Samsung on fixing the unit, I got a good deal on a replacement Samsung Bluray player. Same basic model, I thought, what could go wrong?

Samsung Model #BD-F5700, model code BD-F5700/ZA
Video Output: HDMI
Audio output Coaxial Digital Audio, single output plug, no red or white, or yellow for that matter.

Here's my issue. The Video comes through fine. The audio does not. I picked up an RCA Y-plug adapter thinking that would work. No luck.

Yes, I know my TV is over a decade old, but it still works fine, and I'd like to make this work if I can. So here are my advice seeking questions:

#1 - Is there a cable combination that would work to connect this new Blu Ray player to my good old Mitsubishi? Should my current configuration be working? Might there be an issue with the new player itself? (I've connected it to my other HDMI compatible TV, and both Audio and Video work fine.

#2 - Any advice on how I might be able to resurrect my original Samsung Blu Ray player? (The one where the door won't open?) If I can get that one up and running again, problem solved.

Go ahead and mock my outdated tech if you must, just sneak some advice in there with it...advice other than "buy a new TV." Thanks in advance! EH

I think (and there are bigger experts here who can say more definitively) that it's an "analog sunset" related issue - that is, that newer Blu-ray players no longer support analog output, so there isn't a connection in your new player that's putting out in audio in a way that your TV can understand.

One option might be to find a used Blu-ray player, (or a new "old" player for that matter) which does offer analog audio out. Another option might be to keep your new Blu-ray player, but then get a device called a "Digital to Analog converter" (DAC) which you can plug that coaxial digital audio from the new Blu-ray player on one end, and then it will spit out the red and white analog connections on the other end. (I'm not sure if one would of these methods would provide higher quality than the other, maybe other members can chime in on that point?)

Anyhow, hope this helps.. I'm afraid you might have to buy something to make it all work as it once did, but I think you should be able to get away with either a different Blu-ray player or that converter for far less than what a new TV would be.

Another option, since you are able to get a video signal is to find a cheap/ used AV receiver that accepts an Optical input. You could the send the picture directly to the TV, and listen thru the receiver. You could go step up with a receiver that accepts HDMI, and have the picture pass thru the receiver.

There's a link to BluJeans Cables at the top right column of any HTF page. Monoprice.com is another place to look. Cables don't need to be expensive. And the quality at those two places is actually better (or at least as good as) anything you'd find in a store.

Thanks Mike. I've been looking on the Monoprice website. Here's what I'm looking at. Want to make sure I've made the right choice before I place the order:

Cable:
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603&p_id=2681&seq=1&format=2

Converter:
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=6884&seq=1&format=2

Is there a difference using a powered converter? The BluRay player is Digital Audio "PCM." What is the best "budget" option that will maintain the best audio signal? I know I'm limited to the best "analog" sound. Will this combination work? Or would any of you recommend something different. Thanks again for all the help!

Hey Ed!

Sorry I missed your last post with the questions.

Yup. That's the converter you need. The cable is overkill..."fancy gold-plated" and all that. But for $3.50...how can you go wrong? Just make sure 3-feet will be long enough for your needs.

As to whether there's a difference between a powered/passive converter, I'm not sure. But I'd likely err for the powered converter if it was me. I don't even see a passive converter on the Monoprice site. The only other converter I see is an analog to digital converter. Same as the one you linked-to...but the signal goes the wrong way for your purposes.

Good luck! Let us know that everything worked out.

Thanks for all of the advice. The digital to analog audio converter and cable arrived today. Set everything up and it works fine.

Cable length was fine. The 3ft digital audio cable, combined with my existing 6ft analog audio cables, was more than enough.

Tested the new Blu-Ray player out by watching Captain America The First Avenger this afternoon.

My sons and I are planning an X-men double feature tomorrow with First Class and Days of Future Past, so this fix arrived just in time.

Thanks again!

Thanks, One thing we have noticed is that we do need to turn the volume up fairly high with the Blu Ray player. (in the 40-50 range) That means it is imperative that we remember to reduce the volume before shifting to our regular DVR, or Cable lest we blow the speakers on the TV
