Hard to believe. From DeadlineSony Pictures has made official what has been painfully obvious to everybody since yesterday morning, when hackers threatened to blow up movie theaters if The Interview was released next week. The studio has officially scrapped its release plans. Sony had little choice here, after the major theater chains announced earlier today they would not display the film given the threatening circumstances. Here’s the Sony Statement. In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show thefilm The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners’decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers.Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. Those who attacked us stole ourintellectual property, private emails, and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale – all apparently to thwart therelease of a movie they did not like. We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage toour company, our employees, and the American public. We stand by our filmmakersand their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome.

Sad really. The hackers win despite homeland stating that it was not a credible threat. Heightened security was the answer, not giving in. This sets a precedent that will be repeated.

That was my first thought too Travis. But what if there was a terrorist act at one of the screenings? That's so much worse. I can't believe the North Koreans won! Unbelievable.

This is unfortunate; a sad state of affairs. However, how can terrorists bomb a home video release of the movie? Even if the movie is in bad taste, it should not be suppressed, nor should we be forced to by "foreign" threats.

I'm sure there will be a video release. This only pertains to the theatrical release of course.

The only hope is that the outcry is large enough that the theater chains are embarrassed into doing the right thing and tell Sony they'll play the movie. Sony can't play a movie without distribution but the second they have it, they'll release the movie.

I'm sure there'll be an "Unrated Declassified Special Edition!"

Stoner-pack comedies sooner or later fall back on headline jokes to try and reach some next level and embrace the comic's fears of social maturity, ever since Harold and Kumar escaped from Guantanamo Bay.

And theater-chain boycotts were already a problem for Tower Heist, although not for political/security reasons.

I posted about this on FB but I agree. Sony are being complete pussies because, I'm guessing, they don't want other embarrassing e-mails released. I doubt they're doing this over any sort of real concern, which there should be ZERO of. These people are hackers not another word I won't use here.

So what now? Destroy the film? Are the hackers going to threaten to blow up Redbox machines? Are they going to threaten Netflix or Amazon?

Franco and Rogan aren't much better. Canceling marketing the film? You guys agreed to do it so stand behind the pic. What happens to the guy who gave the greenlight? I doubt they expecting the hacking but didn't they realize N.K wouldn't be happy about the material?

Long live Charles Chaplin and THE GREAT DICTATOR.

The ironic part is that nobody would be talking about this movie for long if at all if the terrorist thread didn't happen. I think this might now do well on disc.

If Sony even wants to release it on disc at all. I'd say the odds of them selling it off completely to a small label for pennies on the dollar are fairly high right now.

And, with their usual competence, struck at the weak, vulnerable heart of Capitalist American Hollywood by attacking............Sony.

Just wait for all the other a-holes that are offended by something in other movies to start making terroristic threats against theaters, and watch those theaters cave.
You have to think that hackers out there are a new "line" that they're going to want to cross. This is pretty big time and you can't help but think others are going to start attacking trying to top this. Perhaps attack Amazon and refuse to let them ship anything? I'm laughing at that but seriously. Where do you go next?

This will certainly make a great movie one day. When this hacking was first announced I told my girlfriend it was probably just Sony's attempt to build up a name for the film. Then it became clear what was going on. However, not for a single second do I believe that they're doing this over the fear of people's safety. I can't help but think there are some very damaging e-mails out there that the hackers said they'd release if the film wasn't pulled. It seems the main goal was to not allow the film to be seen. If they simply wanted to hurt Sony they could have stolen this film and released it online for everyone to see. I really can't wait to see where it goes from here. Will they dump a $42-million dollar film?
