approx 6 months away from full for new media and want hardware solution to extend use for another year. I anticipate needing 8tbs before i can afford new tower. i have open pcie slots and just want to get by in jbod setup. is their a way to add 4 hdds and some controller for internal solution.

Why not an external USB multi bay enclosure. I use a 4 bay one that cost $100.

If you have space for the extra drives in your tower you could get an add in sata card. Question is do you have an open slot on your board for it? You can get PCI or PCIe depend on the flavor of SATA you're looking for. However, if you need another 8TB you're looking at adding at least 2 more disks to your mix. You need to consider cooling and power supply on your tower. I would use a power calc to determine if you need a PS upgrade by adding in two more disks.

I think if you need that much storage I would look at getting some kind of NAS device. Also the JBOD might not be the best way to go as you have no safety net. A raid 5 would be a much better way to go especially with the amounts of data you're talking about. If you lose a disk you're talking about terabytes of data lost.
