Hi all - a question on setting up my Yamaha RX-A740 wi-fi. I have an iPhone, which connects pretty nicely with the AVR's AirPlay, but the Lady of the house has a droid, a Samsung Galaxy 5S, and I'm trying to set up her connection so that she can play the music on her phone over the system like I do. If I go into the phone settings, I see the AVR but it says "Out of reach" and it also says it's "unsecured" which is a little bothersome because it's on the home network and I'd obviously rather have secured access to that.

So, two questions - first, can I secure the AVR wi-fi and, secondly, any thoughts on my connecting the droid to the AVR signal?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Hi, Sam, and thanks for the response. Yes, I did dl the remote app but, if I go into the "input" on the app, the Samsung isn't listed as an option. I could be wrong here but I think I'm missing the "pairing" of the two because the phone's wi-fi listing lists the AVR but also says it's out of reach.

Or am I misunderstanding something else...?

Cause the Samsung isn't an input. It is a controller. The 2.0 update adds in DLNA for music. The easiest thing to do for Android...when iTunes is involved, is transfer iTunes into Spotify. Then use Spotify Connect to run the iTunes supplied music.

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to pull the "dumb it down" request out of the bag, Sam.

I believe I have the most current Yamaha app so would that be what you're referring to with the "2.0 update"?

Regarding the Spotify transition, (and should I assume this is taking another angle at the process?), the phone does not currently have Spotify loaded but that's an easy resolution. Once I have that app loaded (and I'm assuming all the iTunes songs transferred), how does Spotify Connect come into play?

To follow up with a little more detail, my (i)Phone connects to the AVR Spotify connection but we're having issues adding a second "account" (my wife has one account, I have another). I thought that was going to be a challenge for another day but maybe it's going to sucked into this one...?

You can fight it all day or you can just get something like this bluetooth adapter and be done. Have the wife link to the bluetooth and play whatever she wants from her phone.

Ooo, I LIKE that. We could be done here. ;) Thanks, Tony!

But, before we leave the thread, should I be concerned that my AVR wi-fi is unsecured and, assuming that's not really a preferred setup, any thoughts on how I should be setting that up as secured?

Wifi? Do you mean the bluetooth adapter? I wouldn't worry too much as the range on bluetooth is very limited (feet) vs Wifi that can extend hundreds of feet. Even if someone were to be in range they would have to pair it an they all they can really do is play music...if the AVR is on.

Now that's assuming that you're talking about the bluetooth adapter. If your actual home Wifi network is not secured then you have bigger issues than your AVR.

You know, maybe I am a little more confused on this than I thought but allow me to throw out what I do know -

the home wi-fi network is secure;
the AVR has it's own wi-fi (from the site: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-visual/aventage/rx-a740_black_u/

Wi-Fi Built in and Wireless Direct Compatible for Easy Network

Wi-Fi built in capability allows wireless connection with your household wireless router, greatly simplifying system connections to enjoy network audio and music streaming services. If no Wi-Fi router is available, the unique Wireless Direct feature not only allows you to stream music directly from your smartphone or tablet via the AV Controller App's Music Play feature, AirPlay®, etc., but also control your receiver using the AV Controller App.

So, if I go into the AVR wi-fi, it says it's unsecured. My concern is that, since it's connected to my secured network, is it possible that one could get into the unsecured and route their way into my secured network. Or maybe that just shouldn't be a real concern?

Looks like your AVR wifi has two modes standard wifi client and an "wireless direct" mode. The "wireless direct" is an ad hoc network that allows your devices to connect to it without a proper wifi network. However, if you have already connected it to your secure home wifi then the direct mode should be diabled. This is from your manual "You cannot use Wireless Direct simultaneously with the wired or the wireless network connection."

The question is do you have it connected to your home network? If yes then you're good because that is encrypted and will shut off the non secure mode. If no then connect to it. You'll get more functionality and have it secure. However, I think we've already been down this road and you should be connected to your home system.

Yes, it is connected to my home network so I gues I'm good there. Thanks for the confirmation on how that works, Tony. Much appreciated.
