I just realized I never pick this title up on BD. I have the HD DVD as well as two DVD releases including the 25th Anniversary. My question is whether to pick up the 2010 release for $8.99 or the 30th Anniversary release for $14.96? The latter release does have the advantage of HD digital copy along with some bonus material that is not available with the 2010 release. I believer the video presentations are the same with some slightly improved audio with the most recent BD release. Are those differences worth an extra $6.00?

That made me go look, and sure enough, I've never "upgraded" the DVD. I put that in quotes because, at least based on the DCP I saw last year, it's just not a great looking movie anyway. But I should at least retire the DVD, right? I wonder how much better the film could look with a completely fresh start.

The only reason why I noticed is that I'm in the middle of cutting out the duplicates in my collection. Of course, I would've noticed if I decided to watch this film this holiday season.

Same image, but the steelbook newer one has lossless audio.
There's also a new "Christmas In Ohio" featurette, in HD. And everything from the two-DVD edition is on the Blu-Ray, including a copy of Disc 1. The steelbook is very nice-looking too. There's a digital copy. You can get rid of three discs and replace them with one, superior one. If it came with a copy of the original poster art suitable for framing, it would be perfect, but that's why you keep the Laserdisc. Upgrade with confidence, say I.

I picked up that Blu-ray tin a few years ago with the string of leg lamp Christmas lights! They are strung up in the HT every year.

Back in maybe 2004, TBS had in their 24 hour marathon interviews with the cast. The interviews were different than those on the DVD (better IMO), and they included Melinda Dillon. I would really like to see those again on some future edition.

If you decide to go with the cheaper one, remember you can always use the Vudu disc to digital upgrade and get the HDX digital copy for as little as $1.

So let me get this right...

While you are weeding your collection of duplicates, you decided you better buy another copy of A Christmas Story.

Only in a place like the HTF, would that be considered reasonable behavior!

I think my Blu of A Christmas Story was released in 2006.

Actually, since going on a spending spree over the last 30 days or so, I've actually increased the number of titles in my collection as my purchases have exceeded the number of titles I deleted from my collection. I've still opened up space by getting rid of the dvd cases while placing the dvd disc into the BD case of the same title. :)

Yes, but is there anything sadder than the tears of a movie collector who just realized that a disc that he casually discarded contains a feature that is no longer part of his collection?

Nope. Except maybe the tears of a movie collector who had to pay more to get the old version back.
