TV: Sony KDL55W700B
Receiver: Sony STR-DN1000

Components:
- XBox
- STB

Setup:
XBox and STB to receiver HDMI Input
Receiver HDMI out to TV HDMI 3 In
Optical wire from TV Optical out to Receiver TV Optical In

The problem I am having is when I'm using the TV's smart features, such as Netflix, there is no sound coming out of my receiver, I can only get sound from the TV. I have an optical cable running from my TV's optical out port into the receiver's TV optical in port, but it doesn't work. I've swicthed settings on the TV and the receiver is set to TV when automatically when the TV goes into App mode.Sony support stated that the smart app CANNOT output sound using the optical out of the TV and that is why i do not get any sound. I had no choice but to accept what they said.Does anyone have any suggests? I would really like to enjoy the smart app feature sound through my receiver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Wes

If the audio is trapped in the TV, it's trapped in the TV. Some TVs are like that and there's really nothing you can do about it.

Sucks, I know.

About the only alternative is to get a different device (like a Blu-ray player) that supports the services you want and use that instead of the TV. Blu-ray players will always output the sound from their smart/streaming services.

screenwrite - Thank you for the reply. I understand now that some TV's might trap the audio from the smart applications, which seems so illogical to me, especially this day and age, but is there any way to actually confirm this? I have yet to find anything stating that the Smart portion of the does NOT output sound through the optical out.

Thanks again!

If you read other threads, you'll notice a lot of people say Sony support does not know what they are speaking about. I was just seeing if htere is a way to confirm it within a document. I believe Sony Support, I do, but like everyone else on this planet, I'd like to see in an actual document, like the manual that came with the TV.

Thank you,

The manual won't be any help. I have 3, slightly*, smart Panasonic.None of them pass "app audio" onto an external device.*Has like YouTube, Pandora and Facebook. Would have been nice if Pandora worked. But I use external devices(mainly phones) for music.

Ok. I use my xbox for netflix and items such as that, but i was hoping to conserve power by only needing to have the TV on and Receiver, not the xbox, TV and Receiver all at the same time. Also, like you, it would be really nice to have the Pandora.

One last question. Since this thread seems to confirm that audio will not be transmitted through optical lines when using the smart features, will sound transmit to a compatible device that utilizes ARC technology? Right now, my receive is not ARC compatible, but if i did have one, would that solve the problem?

Ok. Well, I really do appreciate all the information and for confirming the fact that the TV will NOT output audio from Smart Apps. Hopefully, somewhere down the line, a firmware update will change that. I hope. But, if it's a hardware limitation, then obviously my hopes and dreams will be destroyed.

Thanks again.

This may be a stupid statement but what the heck.. With my setup I set HDMI3 on my receiver. I named that as "Streaming" so when I want to use my TV/Netflix-VuDu etc I set the reciever to HDMI3 and I get sound.

The TV is already showing the video for netflix and once I select HDMI3 on the rcvr, I get the sound from the TV.

Just a thought

Not sure if this apples but does non app TV sound output to receiver? Make sure your TV sound is set to output to an external sound system.

Then you have one that outputs app audio. Not all brands do.
