Looks like both seasons of Buck Rogers are getting the Blu-ray treatment in Germany early next year:

Sadly these will be in Standard Definition on Blu-ray.

While this SHOULD be a bit better than the DVD release due to all that technical compression whiz bang stuff, is it enough to justify purchasing again?

Also, this will not be released by Koch Media, the company behind the Galactica release, but by Ascot Elite Home Entertainment.

Let the debate begin...

That is a just a horrible idea in my opinion. Blu-Ray should be reserved for HD content only. I can also see how this would be confusing for the average consumer.
I love this show, and unfortunately it isn't the news I was hoping for with Buck Rogers on Blu-Ray :(

I agree with the both of you.

When Galactica hit Blu-ray in Germany, I had hoped Buck would follow, but not like this.

I think most fans are going to feel the same way.

If it's standard def, then it will be in PAL format (since this is for Germany), meaning 4% speedup, so no, this would not be an improvement on the existing DVDs.

This is one of those rare cases of SD content coming out on blu, and illustrates nicely the reason why I've always said that SD "main feature" content should never come out on blu...it'll just confuse some people, and make the others angry.

Ugh, that slipped my mind totally about the PAL speed up in standard definition. Releasing the series in this manner is just bad all the way around. In my opinion.

I can't vouch for the German set, but I have the Madman. Same number of discs (8). I'm very happy with it. Picture is fantastic. Some episodes are in two parts in HD, and SD for the two hour version. But at least they included both. The final episode of season 1 being an exception.

Do the episodes have PAL speed up?

This should be 1080/24p assuming (as expected) if this is a port of the episodes released in the AUS set so no speedup.
Fabulous is almost 100% region locked though unlike the AUS set.

The extras are still up in the air whether those will be the same SD PAL as the AUS set.
I'm hoping someone in DE or UK will get this set a little early and post some more details.
The AUS and UK sets appear to be 8 discs each so expectations are that both sets will be pretty similar.
