Going from the Overture (a nice inclusion of the Roadshow music to this release) to the main title of Stanley Kramer's Judgment at Nuremberg, I feared the worst, as that opening salvo across our screens is far from pretty (or original).

Gray and dupey looking, with positive dirt built in -- not a pretty picture.

Then we arrive at production footage and all is well.

One question that may be going through potential viewers minds will be "Is a three hour long drama about the Nuremberg trials both entertaining, as well as worth three hours of my life?"

My feeling is an enthusiastic "yes."

This is one of those special films that fills in holes in the collections of those who attempt to bring together the work of many of their favorite filmmakers and actors.

The list on this one is long.  You get to add the following to your collection:

Spencer Tracy

Burt Lancaster

Richard Widmark

Marlene Dietrich

Judy Garland

Maximillion Schell

Montgomery Clift

and

for those fans of Captain Kirk,

William Shatner, as Captain Byers

Beautifully photographed in black & white by Ernest Lazlo, and with a score by Ernest Gold, this is a film that stands the test of time nicely.

As a Blu-ray from MGM via Twilight Time it's an appealing presentation, aside of the main title sequence.

The titles also looked (relatively) poor on the new-ish 35mm print I ran last year.

The Amazon link is not to the Twilight Time disc but to a Region B import.

Yes. Don't buy that version. It's the Australian version which I bought because it was cheaper(and region free). While it's most likely the same video transfer and has all the same extras except the isolated score, it does NOT have the overture/exit music or the 5.1 soundtrack. I'm kicking myself for not having waited for the Twilight Time release.

I never get tired of watching this film. It is fresh and compelling. It seems like 30 minutes rather than 3 hours. Every moment is interesting and entertaining. It gives you all points of view and lets you reach your own conclusions. It is not preachy, choosing to present very graphic images and personal stories. Marlene Dietrich gives a very restrained but heartbreaking performance. Judy Garland was nominated for an Oscar but lost. The film won for best actor for Schell and another for writing. Having the isolated score is a dream come true. Listening to the scoring of Wagner's Rienzi during Dietrich's personal recollection of meeting Hitler with and without dialogue is breathtaking. Spencer Tracy is gold and lovable as the judge. He grounds the film in realism with warmth, humor and tenderness. The cinematography is beautiful. Grab this while you still can because it's very limited. Those of you on the fence and who've never seen it, don't miss it. The story is told with a restraint and power that is gone from today's films. And the transfer and sound are both excellent.

I love this film! It is one of my all-time favorites: a fine example of Stanley Kramer's directorial finesse and Montgomery Clift's 12 minutes on screen are absolutely compelling.

Just watching this film this evening. It's riveting. Every star is amazing. I couldn't take my eyes or ears off anyone. C'mon, Tracy, Clift, Schell, Widmark, Garland, Dietrich, Lancaster, etc. etc. Love these adult films from the late 50's, early 60's.

Agreed. Sensational performances. The only (relatively) weak link for me was Widmark, but only in a couple of early scenes. The rest of his scenes I thought were fine. Tracy is a master class on acting and reacting.

So happy to hear about this Blu of a great film. I first saw this on TV as a adolescent and I was struck how the film had these unique mechanical pans that I had never seen before. Pan and scan. Looking forward to putting this on my wish list.

May Gawd help me.

Created an account on Screen Archives. Gonna buy this one. First TT release of mine. Shipping to Brazil is 10 dollars (2.7 Brazilian Real) but there is no other way to actually purchase this title.

TT's products are of a limited quantity and rather expensive, but a movie lover shouldn't let that refrain him from adding such important classics to his collection. Hopefully, it'll be worth it.

It's worth it. Get it before it goes out of print and the price really goes up! There's also a much cheaper Australian version that is the same transfer but doesn't have the isolated score and 5.1 sound.

That's my main concern.

Gotta buy almost 10 other titles in the upcoming months before they're sold out.

However, they are going to re-release a new restoration of the 1959 JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH that sold out overnight.
The first one didn't sell out over night. It was available from May 8th 2012 until July 11th 2012. I don't think any title has sold out in less than 10 days or so.

Just watched this today for the first time in my life. Powerful. Complex. Moving. PQ is poor for the title sequence, but after that, as has been said, it's quite good. And the thought-provoking essay by Kirgo really adds to the appreciation of the many talents involved.

On sale for a few more days at $20+ shipping, but well worth it even at full price.

I had forgotten about this reissue and snapped it up for $20 just now.

Yes, excellent film. Even though I have ready access to the cheaper Australian version, I opted for the TT version. Grab it while it's still available. My favorite performance in the movie comes from Montgomery Clift.

For me, the fearless high-wire act on this project was Maximilian Schell. In 1961, he was relatively unknown stateside, except for TV. And yet there he was, in this hugely* unsympathetic role, holding his own amidst all these legendary screen greats.

* but not completely, thanks to Schell's intriguing nuances.
