How should I set it up? Should it go:

-Option 1 - Blu Ray/Tivo (with hdmi and optical audio)>>>Receiver>>>TV with hdmi

-Option 2 - Blu Ray/Tivo>>>TV>>>Receiver with Optical Audio

The problem I run into with Option 1 is that the surround sound will not work without Optical audio plugged in. I have a sony receiver with 2 optical audio inputs, but I have more that 2 devices that I want surround sound on. What should I do?

Hi Barett, option 1 is usually the best connection, but you should only need to use the HDMI -- HDMI can carry both picture and sound, so you shouldn't need to use the optical cable with the HDMI cable. On your device settings, you might want to double check to make sure that they're set to output audio over HDMI rather than optical or anything else.

Thank you for your reply. The issue I have with the Tivo Especially, is that it has two audio options, Dolby and PCM Pass through. Neither will work if I do not have the Optical audio plugged in with it. I currently have the system set up with Option 1 up there.

Unfortunately I'm not a giant expert with Tivo, so I'm not sure what the issue would be there. I would think that in theory, with Dolby set up, it should pass the audio through to your receiver via the HDMI cable. That's what that connection was designed to do, so I'm not sure why it's not working properly. I know there are at least a few forum members who do have Tivo, so perhaps one of them can chime in. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Crap! I just answered my own question. The receiver I have does not support audio from HDMI. Nevermind everybody!

How can you tell if a receiver is capable of Audio over HDMI? Like, is the Sony STDR DH550 capable?

Virtually all new receivers pass audio through the hdmi connection these days. Early receivers, like your Sony str dh-500, were often only "hdmi switchers" meaning they only switched the video from the receivers input but not the audio. Receivers that pass audio are often called "hdmi repeaters".

I'd also look at Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer's entry level receivers.

The reason I didn't mention Marantz is that they don't really offer an entry level avr. The 5009 retails for $899! And I'm not sure about H/K over the last few years. BB through them out 'cause of too many returns.

When HDMI was new, the first two generation bargain bin AVR were "pass through".That nonsense ended 6 years ago. All 1.4 AVR take audio off the HDMI.The "end" of 1.3 take off the HDMI. Onkyo was the first(with everyone else following suit the next year) with the X07 models.Denon got rid of pass through on their bargain end with the X90/XX10.I don't follow Sony, so have no idea when they did.In short, you don't need a "new" AVR...just a "newer" one.
