My Pioneer VSX 7300 is over 25 years old and getting tired. I have it connected to Bose Acustimass 5 system (the large cubes + base. I do not have an interest in a surround sound system. This receiver is 125w per channel. Some reasonably priced ones like the Sony are rated a little lower -the STR-DH130-but will I get the same sound quality I once had with my Pioneer. I have not bought or paid attention to receivers for many years so have no clue what's on the market.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about the 7300 specifically, but the older receivers were generally stronger than what is out now unless you go higher up in the lines, or separates.

Sony is not generally a first choice for receivers, the usual list is: Yamaha, Marantz, Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo, and Harmon/Kardon.

If you can find one, I'd go with an H/K 3490. They are recently discontinued, but you may still be able to find one on Amazon or at a dealer. That model was as close as you were going to come to the old tanks (reasonably priced).

The h/K 3770 looks interesting, but I don't know enough about it to recommend it, other than to say if I were going 2 channel it would be on my list.

I like the Yamaha line (I have a three 5.1's, but not a stereo), so I'll throw out the r-500 and 700.

Also consider the Outlaw Audio RR2150 stereo receiver, $699.00, 100W x 2 (8 ohms), 160W x 2 (4 ohms). Outlaw products typically offer serious performance for the money. I've owned their M200 monoblocks at one time, which I ran in my party system.

The RR2150 has impressive performance, and set of features including USB input for digital audio playback, MM/MC phono stage, processor loop, subwoofer output with bass management, and bass EQ. It has been a Stereophile Magazine Recommended Component for the last 3 years running.
