Also for the people that might feel left out, due to different holiday traditions and such,

Okay, note to self - hit the page down button! :)

By the way, Shout! Factory is doing their streaming feed again on Thanksgiving day (noon Eastern, 9 am Pacific) with six episodes of MST3K, complete with brand new introductions by Joel Hodgson. I know where I'm going to be!

I'll have to think of some suitable Summer-themed stuff for Christmas ....
But while I think, we'll watch our annual screening of 'Trading Places'...
Isn't it traditional to watch "The Proposition" on Australian Christmas Eve? I'd sure like to think so.

And so it begins. . . .

01) A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)
Much like the Halloween special - what the hell can I say about ACBT that hasnt been said a billion times before? The show is filled with heartwarming charm and other warm fuzzy cliches from my childhood. Schulz and producers Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson managed to hit just all the right marks. No matter what you think about the end of Charles Schulz's career, the late 60's and early 70's were unquestionably his golden era and it just doesn’t feel like the holidays unless they're prefaced with Chuck and the gang.
I give it 4 plates of pretzel sticks and toast out of 5

02) The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
Meanwhile, at the other end of the heartwarming and charming spectrum is George Lucas' secret shame where Chewie tries to get home for the holidays, Chewie's grandfather watches Porn and a Cross Dressing Harvey Korman does schtick. It's. . . . um. . . well, if there was any doubt in your mind that Star Wars originated in the seventies, the Holiday Special will eliminate that doubt forever. But as seventies variety shows goes - well, it's still pretty bad. And yet, somehow I love it so, and hey - the animated segment is actually pretty good!

I hate it when people start up with the Life Day stuff before it's even Christmas!

01 Pieces of April (2003) ****

A rebellious, estranged daughter invites her family over for Thanksgiving dinner, a dinner that might be her mother's (dying from breast cancer) last.
Poor April is the black sheep of the family. It's very telling that her family have no fond or good memories of her. Having had a series of drug-dealing boyfriends she is currently living with a nice young man but in a slummy part of New York. Her family is driving in from a nice community in Pennsylvania and we learn a lot about this family and April during this drive. Meanwhile April who has very little talent for cooking I might add, is scrambling around to make the perfect Thanksgiving dinner. Discovering that her oven doesn't work she runs around the apartment building looking for someone with an oven that is free and is willing to help her. She meets some nasties but also kind people along the way and I imagine learn an important lesson along the way.

I loved this movie and really felt for this girl. Played quite well by Katie Holmes, you could feel her anguish, anger over past slights and anxiety over having her family over and perhaps finally getting approval from her mother. It's quite a bittersweet story and the ending one could say is oversentimental but for me was satisfying. Usually a yearly watch on Thanksgiving which for me is in October. I missed it last month so it was nice to catch it on this day.

I watched quite a few things on my one day off.

Too Close for Comfort #311 "A Thanksgiving Tale"
A horrible episode that I found really annoying every time they had baby Andrew talk like Bruce Willis in Look Who's Taling.

Chopped Thanksgiving "Give it Your All"
Another Thanksgiving episode that I enjoyed.

New Girl #409 "Thanksgiving IV"
Everyone brings a date for someone so they can get laid for Bansgiving.
Another solid Thanksgiving episode.

WKRP in Cincinnati "Turkey's Away.
I had never seen this episode before but new how the promotion played out.
Very funny episode.

Bob's Burger #416 "Dawn of the Peck"
Not my favorite holiday episode from Bob's Burger, but still fun.

Bewitched #119 "Samantha's Thanksgiving to Remember"
I really liked this episode.
This one had absent minded Aunt Clara time travel the family and the neighbor back to the pilgrim days.
And Darren is cast as a witch for using a match to light a fire.

Tosh.0 #629 "Christmas episode"
A whole mess of fun.

Holiday Baking Championship #103 "It's Not Holiday without Pie"
I love watching these types of things. Not my favorite one with pie making but still fun at this time of the year.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time.
I get teared up at the end every time.

Friends
"The one Where Chandler Doesn't Like Dogs" Slightly boring. My least favorite Thanksgiving episode of theirs.
"The One with Chandler in a Box" I love this episode. Very funny.
"The One with the Rumor" I love this episode just for Brad Pitt giving Rachael those smoldering hateful looks.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
Another great Charlie Brown holiday special.
I love Peppermint Patty sweet talking "Charles" and Snoopy and Woodstock setting up the dinner table.
Great times.

We gather together to watch cheesey movies at Comedy Central on Thanksgiving Day, and Mystery Science *breath* theater 3000. It's 30 straight hours and it's called turkey day!

03) MST3K #505: The Magic Voyage of Sinbad (1993)
The movie - some kind of bizzare russian movie that was purchased by Roger Corman and redubbed as a Sinbad flick - is batshit crazy. The Riffting, on the other hand, is MST3K at it's prime. They show has hit its stride by now, the jokes are dead on and the host bits are memorable.
I give it 3 Ozark Mountain Daredevils out of 5

04) MST3K #810: The Giant Spider Invasion (1997) (New to me)
The Skipper is the most notable thing about this goofy, fun, enjoyable stinkburger of a flick. The Giant Spider is more of a large furry VW bug with pipe-cleaners glued to it than a ligitmate monster - making it perfect for some good Riffing. While I'm not a Joel/Mike snob, I'm not a huge fan of the Sci-fi era of the show. That said, this is one of the strongest of that period, with great jokes and a clever host bits revoving around a Invasion of the Body Snatchers-ish arc.
I give it 4 Packers! WOOOO! out of 5

05) MST3K #210: The Lost Continent (1990)
Lost Continent will always have a special place in my heart - it was my first MST3K episode ever, and it blew my goddamned mind! Holy crap, these people do exactly what I do - but are funny about it! The movie itself is horrificly bad, but the episode is actually pretty funny! It lives up to my warm nostalgic feelings.
I give it 5 Rock Climbings out of 5

06) MST3K #706: Laserblast (1996)
The writing is bad, the acting is non-existent (even from McDowell, who looks distracted and is looking to collect his paycheck for appearing in the movie and get the hell off set as fast as he can), the plot is nonsensical, the editing and pacing is atrocious and the effects - well, stop-motion animation seldom ages well, and it's still the best effect in the entire damn movie! But at least the explosions - and there are a lot of them - are well staged.
I give it 3 Detached Umbilicus out of 5

07) MST3K #303: Pod People (1991)
Pod People was my second ever MST3K episode, firmly cementing the series as perfection in my Bad Movie Mind. The movie is horrifically bad, bordering on incoherent - but there's plenty of rifting potential here to be had.
I give it 4 It Stinks out of 5

08) MST3K #903: The Puma Man (1998) (New to me)
Wow. Just wow. This movie is pain. It is not just painful, but the very essence of paint itself. It is a singularity of which no other sensations can escape it's massive gravitational pull. And Donald Pleasence - sorry Don, I take back everything bad I ever said about Halloween VI. This flick trumps that one in spades. But, as we know by now: bad movie makes for great riffing! Mike and the Bots are more than capable of handling this stinkbomb - it's some quality stuff!
I give it 5 genuine Aztec masks out of 5

09) MST3K #507: I Accuse My Parents (1993) (New to me)
Joel says that I Accues My Parents is one of his favorite episodes of the run - and it's easy to see why. The film is your typical "This could happen to you!" PSA, much like Sinister Urge and the like - so it's a dry, 'informitive' film, but it's still entertaining as hell. The host bits are great and there's plenty of quality riffing to go around.
I give it 4 Truck Farmers out of 5

10) MST3K: The Movie (1996)
One last Turkey for Turkey Day - this time Mike and the Bots take on a Big Budget film: This Island Earth. The problem here is, if you were paying attention to my Rifftrax viewing of Jaws, when they Riff on a good movie, I spend most of my time trying to watch the movie instead of enjoying the bots. While This Island Earth is nowhere near Jaws in quality, it's much better than the usual stinkbombs the Big Brains guys usually tear apart. So while the jokes arent any better or worse than one of the televsion episodes, they dont work as well here. Plus the delivery slower - the jokes-per-minuet ratio is lower and the riffs are less obscure.
I give it 2 Interocitors out of 5

Did you ever notice how Franklin doesn't get a single line in the whole thing?

And in the credits, Franklin is voiced by a female.

Puma Man is pretty bad. But I still love watching it on a regular basis.

Anyone going to Rifftrax "Santa Claus" on Dec 4th?
