I bought X-Men: Days of Future Past on Blu-Ray today, I put in the tray, clicked the button and the screen read ''loading disc'' as usual, but then suddenly it returned to the menu with the options ''Play'' ''USB'' and ''Settings'', but whenever I click ''Play'', nothing happens.

My Blu-Ray player is the Philips BDP3000, I'm not connected to BD Live, but I have the most recent firmware. Please help.

Hi there. I'm in the same boat. Fox used a new form of copy protection that makes it so many players won't play the disc. I hate to say it, but if your firmware is up-to-date, you're out of luck unless Philips releases some new firmware. I have an OPPO and, unfortunately, the company is finished releasing firmware for it. I'm glad I found out about the issue before I bought the disc. If I were you, I'd try and return it to where you purchased it and contact Fox customer service to complain. I love Blu-ray but all the firmware updates has done nothing to stop piracy and has, instead, affected those of us who actually pay for discs.

Well I've contacted Philips to get their take on the matter. :( I was unbelievably excited for this movie, definitely my number 1 most looking forward to Blu-Rays of 2014. I just really hope Philips will do something about this...

The Philips support team have been very helpful. They gave me tips on reinstalling the firmware and resetting the settings etc. They tell me if none of these work, to email them and they will most likely make an update for it.

DarraghQ: I posted the same question back on November 2nd, with quite a few responses. Just scroll down. Oh ... and I finally just got off my butt and
replaced our DVD/Blu-Ray player with the All Region player I'd purchased some while back. The latest X-MEN played just fine, as did the TV Series that was giving me trouble. Best of luck with your problem!

That's what everybody should do.

That's some crap. You guys have every right to be upset. Remember when you bought a VHS, put it into any VCR in the NTSC region, and it played? The region lockout nightmare is one thing, this is another entirely. Hopefully Fox is getting some angry mail about this. I understand the need for copy protection, by when one bends over backwards to buy things legally and this is the result, it certainly doesn't reflect very well on the studios

I got a reply from a really friendly support worker at Philips - ''Thank you for letting me know. The software for this model would have to be updated. Our technical team will work on it. I sent the information you provided me with to them. I cannot give any estimates when it will be available but we will provide a solution as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions.'' :)

My UK set of the 3D version arrived today . I assume its the same as the US one as its region free .
Both 3D and regular discs loaded on my Panasonic player the same as any other disc does.

It would be interesting to know what makes some discs a problem on one brand but not another.
Why would one brand need a firmware update for a new kind of copy protection yet another brand has no issues even if the player is years old.
Very strange.

Yeah I actually have the same UK one as you but 2D. (I'm Irish but we get the exact same copies of Blu-Rays and DVDs since both our ratings are on the front cover).

I had an issue on my Panasonic player once. I used the remote to start at Chapter 2 and the movie played. Give that a shot while you wait for the firmware update.

Hi Daragh,

Any update on this? Can you send me the details of how to go about contacting Philips customer support etc? I have literally the exact same problem, having bought this yesterday (I'm also Irish, and it's also a BDP 3000). I'm extremely hungover and I was looking forward to some X-Men.

Thanks.

Brian, not sure which OPPO BD player you have, but I don't think that's true. OPPO did release new firmware for this very issue, dated Nov. 26. Here is a link to the page for the BDP-83, the model I have. I installed this new firmware, but I still didn't try playing the X-Men disc, although I do have it.

As far as DOFP not playing anymore...Many manufacturers have released new firmware to address the Fox messup(nobody at Fox has called this a messup. Many forum members at another site have...YMMV).Anyway, recheck for a software update.

Hi,

Yes. Bad news. ''I am writing in regards to your email concerning Philips product. Our technical team has looked into the matter. Your discs apply to new disc format which did not exist when the player was manufactured. This leads to playability problem with these discs. Unfortunately, this is not resolvable by software update. Some of the new titles will not work on this player. I understand the inconvenience but we do not have a technical solution to this issue.''

According to wikipedea at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BD%2B (and it all looks convincing to me as a software engineer) BD+ (Digital rights copy protection) uses a virtual machine to decrypt the discs, so why can't Phillips implement a new VM for the BDP 3000?

I'd like Phillips to explain in detail why it's not possible. If BD+ is all software based, what limitations of the BDP 3000 is causing them problems?

They patched the BDP 83, and apparently it was due to a time-out during decryption. That sounds like extra decryption tasks have been added, or more fix up is required - either way, surely that's just software.

Come on Phillips, explain yourselves!
