Low Budget TV Suggestions (1 Viewer)

Hey guys!

Love the forum here and am glad to say I found this site otherwise I would have made another mistake and bought a low quality surround sound system instead of really researching and finding some nice but economic pieces.

So I have my new audio set up (Denon AVR E300, BIC America front and center and back speakers, Dayton 1200 Sub), not the best but a start for a college student, but I now want to upgrade my TV. (Current: 32 inch 720p Samsung)

I've been looking at Black Friday ads and everything else on amazon and cnet. I was hoping I could come here to get some specific recommendations on my situation and needs.

I don't have a strict price range but the cheaper the better. I was hoping to spend no more than 600 dollars on a new TV. If this puts me out of the game instantly and no one here can recommend TVs with that low of a price tag let me know.

As for what I need/want. The biggest reason I want to upgrade is I want 1080p which is almost a given now a days. As for refresh rate or anything of the other technologies/terms I'm not sure what I need. I think I'd want to go to 120 HZ for refresh rate but like I said i'm not positive. As far as size goes I just want something bigger. I'm fine with going as big as i can get without losing quality in the TV. The only thing I should add here is it's going to be used in a dorm room. The seating is approximately 7.5 feet away from the TV.

Although I think Smart TVs are cool and have their pros, I don't think I need a smart TV. I have my Xbox One which can stream Netflix and any other things I will be using. I also am able to use my Computer if I need/want to. So I don't see a need for a Smart TV in my situation.

Seeing as my price range is low and my interest isn't very high, I'm not worried about 4k or 3D technologies.

I can't think of anything else you guys would need to know about my situation to help me out other than I would like this TV to last me a few years down the road and be able to "keep up" in a sense with technology.

50-51 Samsung or LG plasma. Period.Both are $600(LG) and $665(Samsung).Buy one while you can.

Any chance you think they will go on sale for black Friday or cyber Monday?

Hell no.I bet all "new in box" plasma will be gone in 2 weeks.(I'm shocked Amazon shows stock on those two)$600 on the LG is already "stupid cheap". They were $900(for the Samsung a month ago) and $750(last week for the LG).

Sounds like you've already made some good decisions. Value is defined as best bang for the buck, or the best you can get within a certain budget point. Whatever you decide, I'd stick with a major brand. LG looks to have about the most bang for the buck among the major brands. I wouldn't worry about UHD or 4K: the implementation will take years.

Okay so i'm at dilemma. I guess I just a need a few people to get me over it.

The two plasmas seem like a great TV for a great price. But 600 is the top of my budget so it's also the most expensive option.

I want to buy one of them as soon as possible for fear that they won't be there in a week or two. But I want to wait and see what TVs will be on sale for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I might be able to find one close in quality for 200 dollars cheaper.

You know what I'm saying? Maybe I'm just overthinking how great Black Friday and Cyber Monday are but I just want to make sure that if I buy this I won't be disappointed when I see ads for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Plasma is no longer in production. I don't think there are any 42" 1080P left.Meaning you get a 50-51. Panny are long gone.

So these plasmas will be better than anything else I will find for sale on Black Friday or Cyber Monday as far as quality goes?

Yes. That is going to be the answer from these parts.

i bought a 55" Panasonic Plasma a few years ago (top end of my budget) and haven't regretted it for a moment.

The members here are in deep mourning over the end of the production of plasma TVs.

Both will be about the same? Be nice to save the 65 dollars on a warranty if there isn't a huge difference.

EDIT: Just found the Samsung on Best Buy's site for 549.99! Judging by reviews and original price I feel as though the Samsung is a better choice anyway. Thoughts?

EDIT: I can get it for 500 flat. I feel like I should jump on this seeing as the TV is originally 1200 according to amazon.

In case you haven't bought your TV yet...ShopHQ (the former ShopNBC) has 3 60" plasma. Two Samsung and one LG...Low and high $700 for dumb. Low $800 for smart.All three are refurb...which means 90 day warranty. ShopHQ 3rd party warranty is on par with SquareTrade.Mentioning it as ShopHQ does easy pay. All three have 5 easy pay...1st includes shipping ($29 for one...maybe all) and warranty, if you get one. No tax either.

I got the 51 inch Samsung with tax and a 2 year warranty for $540. Real happy with it. Plus 60 inches would be getting pretty big for my dorm room and room at home.

LOL! IF my wife wouldn't kill me, I might jump on one of these last plasmas. I've never actually gone plasma -- went from CRT to CRT RPTV to DLP RPTV to FP now since these other options always seemed the better overall value (for me) each time I shopped.

I'm sorta keeping an eye out for something smaller mostly because I still need something for when not using the big FP setup. For now, our 5-plus-yo 61" Sammy DLP RPTV still works great, but who knows how long it'll last... plus we could probably use something smaller in our small-ish livingroom when not watching a movie on the FP setup. People visiting us think our RPTV is huge... until we throw on the FP (at 100-to-120"), LOL.

Anyway, 50" Sammy plasma (at well under $600) for your dorm room sounds awesome! IIRC, I only had a cheapy 13" CRT back in the day (and really only because I needed something to use w/ my Commodore 64 since I wasn't paying for cable, etc), LOL...
