trajan,
I ordered my copy of THE DEVILS a couple of months ago through Amazon (USA). The price for the DVD was $11.01

Looks like a bootleg.

Anyhow, the rumor is Criterion will get it since it was recently made known that WB is going to work with them in 2015. Or something like that.

That above Edition is nothing more than a bootleg. If you want a real copy and own a region free player you will want to import the UK BFI Video edition. BFI was able to license the film from WB for a UK DVD only release.

Why do you categorically state that this version is a bootleg?
I bought it through Amazon and looks like a nice anamorphic widescreen transfer to me.
Does Amazon sell bootleg DVD's?

Yes, Amazon sells bootlegs. WB owns the movie and have never released The Devils. The BFI's release is the only authorized one in existence.

Yes, it does and RAH can attest to that fact.

Also it is being sold thru a Third Party Seller on Amazon. so it isn't like a major studio is supplying the stock. You'd be surprised at the amount of bootlegs of releases out there that people say are legit but are just well done copies of the originals. I had a friend buy the Beatles stereo box set a few years ago and it was insane how well done it was but he had me look into it and a third party seller sold him a bootleg. But again that BFI UK region 2 locked DVD is a quality release. I think WB was testing the waters and since it has been out a long while in UK with no controversy I think they could for sure license a release thru Criterion.

The way I saw it, uncut, in Puerto Rico, when it opened theatrically. Obviously we got the international version, not butchered by the UK or US censors.

The "uncut" version only ever existed in a rough cut form and was cut by the studio and the director on advice from WB and the BBFC before the film was finished. These scenes were never even dubbed. Thus, as I understand it the X rated version released to British cinemas was the "hardest" cut anyone saw during original release. The US version was cut further to get an R.

Some of the footage that was cut to achieve the British X rating was restored in 2004 (it currently only exists in SD), though even this is not the complete original cut, as some of the footage is still lost.

Was Redgrave's masturbation scene with the crucifix in the print you saw? It was in the one my wife, her friends (who could not believe what they were seeing) and I saw on its original release. Not an outtake. We received prints from international sources, not the USA and not England, because our prints carried Spanish subtitles. That's why the cuts in the US version did not affect what we saw. Regarding the BBFC and WB, that was in England.

If by print you mean the BFI DVD then yes, that is in there, and thus it was also seen by British audiences as the DVD is the X cut. The two major scenes that were cut before the film was completed and went undubbed until 2004 are the scene were Redgrave masturbates with the charred femur bone after the bonfire, and earlier when the nuns pull the giant crucifix off the wall and rape it (some face sitting, and IIRC one fashions a makeshift dildo and uses it to have sex with the thing).

Yep, I bought that one knowing it was probably bootleg. Bad transfer, not worth getting.

A Criterion editon would be a triumph after allllll these years and WB silliness over a movie.

Eddie, I mean a 35mm print when the film opened in Puerto Rico. We haven't seen the DVD. My wife distinctly remembers the scenes you described above.
No controversy here, just memory and the fact that we saw the movie in a foreign version print, so who knows what we saw, and it's been many years. Like all of us, we just want the film to be released complete in a gorgeous BD version ASAP.
Thanks for describing the cut scenes. As I said, we haven't seen the film since it opened, so some particulars would be vague.

Warner-- What gives you the right to decide what we should and should not see here in the US. What are you, the film police?

Warner- give us your reason why we should not be allowed to see an offical uncut version of THE DEVILS in the US. After all you're the studio that made.it.
