Produced by Universal and telecast as occasional specials between 1972 and 1974 by David Victor ("Marcus Welby M.D."), this was a revival/reboot of a 1950s tv series, one hour biographical dramas of famous lives.

Four specials were made --

The Woman I Love - Portrait
The story of King Edward VIII, who abdicates the throne of England to marry American divorcée Wallis Warfield Simpson (Faye Dunaway). Churchill: Henry Oliver. Queen Mary: Eileen Herlie. Perry: Patrick Macnee. Baldwin: Robert Douglas.

A Legend in Granite - Portrait
The story of Vince Lombardi's first two years as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Lombardi: Ernest Borgnine. Marie: Colleen Dewhurst. Max McGee: James Olson. Paul Hornung: John Calvin. First broadcast in 1973.

The Man from Independence - Portrait
Harry S. Truman's early political career as a county judge in 1929 Missouri. Truman: Robert Vaughn.

The Man Whose Name Was John - Portrait
Raymond Burr plays Archbishop Angelo Roncalli (later elected Pope), who, while serving as Papal Nuncio to Turkey, saved 647 Jewish children from being sent to Nazi Germany. Monsignor Ryan: Don Galloway. De Menezes: Henry Darrow.

Other than a few clips of "Legend in Granite" on You Tube, no sign of these shows have been seen since they were originally telecast (though some say the USA Network ran "Legend in Granite" once).

If there was ever a perfect two disc dvd collection, it would be this series -- as many people remember "Legend in Granite" as some kind of 'lost movie', they'd certainly get a big surprise at the show's 48 minute running time.

Would this show be a perfect candidate for Universal's 'Vault' series or even as a complete series set? One hopes so as I think there would certainly be a great many Green Bay Packers fans and Ernest Borgnine fans (yep!) who would certainly treasure this set.
