So I was watching The Blues Brothers last night, and I had an issue where the movie locked up during the scene when Jake and Elwood are both in the phone booth, just before Carrie Fisher hits them with the flamethrower. This happened with BOTH the theatrical and extended versions. The Oppo 103, froze right when Jake says, "no, I'm gonna make a phone call" if I just let it set it will eventually stutter ahead a bit and eventually jump ahead to a bit of the Nazis at Wrigley Field, then play fine from the start of the next chapter, right when they pull into Bob's Country Bunker. I tried rebooting, clearing memory, heck even a firmware update, but it locked up everytime right at the same spot, once again in BOTH versions. I thought this had both versions separate on the blu-ray and not branched, but if both lock up at the same point, wouldn't that mean it is branched? Since it's about halfway thru the film, and I thought it might be a disc error at the layer change. This is the original first release from 2011, so I wanted to see if anyone else has had anything like this happen with this first release, not knowing if it could be a manufacturing error that cropped up over time. I didn't see anything visible with the disc, no bronzing or anything on the disc.I went ahead and ordered a new copy since I doubt I'd have any luck getting a replacement from Universal. But I did want to give a heads up in case there is a manufacturing error on this run. With the Criterion disc bronzing thing going on, the idea of a disc going bad on the shelf is worth reporting.

Don't have another player handy. But it plays up to that point, then plays fine after that point and have not had any issues with other discs.

And one other weird thing, if I high speed rewind I can rewind thru most of the area that won't play, but even then it will lock up at a certain point. Plus if I try to play in that segment after rewinding, it won't play either. It seems like the same thing that I've had happen with a bad dvd layer change, like there is a defective sector at the layer change.

I've had several bluray discs which play fine on one player, but have problems on another player (ie. freezing, skipping, etc ...).

After checking these discs entirely on the computer for bad sectors, there were no signs of anything wrong with the discs. (The computer can play these "problem" discs without any problems).

I have noticed with many dvd discs like this, some discs will slow down close to the layer change on the computer when I'm performing bad sector checks. But in the end, the computer doesn't encounter any bad sectors.

I wonder if the slight differences between computer players and commercial stand alone players, that the stand alone players are just more sensitive to slight errors? This is the first time I've had an issue that doesn't seem tied to a firmware issue, with Blu-ray Discs at least.

Not neccessarily.

I have an old dvd player that can play through just about anything. It's an old "made in china" el cheapo player from the early 2000's. When it comes across a group of difficult to read sectors on a problematic dvd disc, it just plays through whatever garbage the laser reads until it reaches some non-problematic sectors. (This player rarely ever slams into a "brick wall" and freezes).

In terms of accuracy, it seems like most computer dvd-rom drives are designed for reading generic data, where movie dvd discs are treated as if it was generic data. Such computer optical disc drives seem to have a lot of failsafe algorithms for dealing with problematic discs.

I just watched my copy in the last month and I can confirm that there was nothing wrong with my copy, it played straight through without a hitch.

Maybe we should start an all-purpose "glitch" thread (if there isn't one already ). Blues Brothers has been out for years, nobody's reported any problems. Likely the disc is scratched or smugged, or you need to clean you bluray player.
