Last month's announcements and this months add up to zero titles of interest to me (although to others, of course, some will be appealing). I guess I can concentrate on TT and Shout! and European imports. Come to think of it, not much money saved, just re-directing it. Ah, the woes of being a devoted collector!

Totally agree! Why do I even bother to look? Just wish they'd announce something remotely interesting so I could run out and spend money on something of theirs. Wasn't their cartoon a few months back meant to get us ready for FELLINI SATYRICON? Just wish I could concentrate on TT or Shout, but they don't put out the stuff I'd want to buy anymore. Well, maybe Eureka/Masters of Cinema and Kino will keep the faith alive. And, WB has been full of surprises lately.

Well, I, for one, think Criterion is doing a bang up job of providing us with a mix of esoteric foreign and American fare with a mix of genuine American cult classics. I'd hate for it to turn into an outlet for Warners (or any other studio) product. I can see the requests now, "Criterion, when are you going to do A Summer Place?" or "Criterion, is Robin And The 7 Hoods on your release schedule?".

I'm totally content with this month's line up featuring an eclectic mix of Preston Sturges, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Japanese samuari and an Argentinian film I've been longing to see.

Agreed. I want absolutely none of the December and January titles but I'm still glad to see a fairly eclectic mix of titles coming from someone.

For one, in a way I'm glad Criterion follows the pattern they do. As I'm primarily interested in pre-1970 Hollywood titles, I'd spend a fortune if Criterion released more of those. Right now, it's pretty consistent at 1 title in my wheelhouse each month (My Darling Clementine, It Happened One Night, Foreign Correspondent, The Palm Beach Story, etc), with the remaining titles in areas I have little interest in.

It's interesting you listed those four titles, as they represent four of my top five directors (the fifth is Curtiz, and the recent Yankee Doodle Dandy fills that void).

Pretty much my favorites too, but I would also add Hawks to my list. Curtiz, IMO, is sorely underrated. Love his stuff with Errol Flynn, which are my grail titles on BD.

Well, for those who say there is "nothing" the last two months... And that they need "new blood"... I can't understand how you can say that, as a movie fan, because "IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT" is a pretty darn good film, an important one in film history. It's a big coup for Criterion. I don't think they need "new blood", I think they are doing a great job! That said, adding Warners title would be amazing, especially if they could get THE EMIGRANTS.I don't think Criterion is failing just because they haven't released seventeen 1950s titles in Swahili from the Belgian Congo.Keep up the GREAT work Criterion!

I certainly do not think Criterion is "failing." They are doing a great job. I was just expressing personal disappointment that none of the titles announced for the past two months have been of interest to me as I await upgrades of FIRES ON THE PLAIN, THE VIRGIN SPRING, SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING and many others, along with (hopefully) new titles such as AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD, THE OFFICIAL STORY and other very rare World Cinema films. If they do begin turning out Warner Bros. fare, I hope they stick to foreign and silent classics, such as the EMMIGRANTS/THE NEW LAND, THE WIND, THE CROWD, GREED, DAY FOR NIGHT, AKIRA KUROSAWA'S DREAMS, etc. I shouldn't have posted another of those, "Oh, I wish they'd release xxxx instead of xxxx" threads. That sounds like whining. I'm just feeling my age (65) and hoping for major want-list titles to emerge before I'm too old or ill to enjoy them. No doubt some of them will.

I don't care who releases the movies I want As long as they get released.

Agree to a point, but every label has its own character (and flaws). For instance, Criterion remastered THIEF, an MGM/UA pickup, in 4K and it looks fantastic but if Kino or even Twilight Time had released it instead we would've had to accept an average transfer (and possibly no extras). It's great when we get our favorite films released but, depending on who does it, quality and quantity (not to mention prices) will fluctuate quite a bit.

I moan about people who ONLY care about the mainstream, Hollywood classics (or worse, only "Best Picture nominees").

The only title from the last two announcements that's a must-buy for me is SAFE, but I certainly wouldn't say Criterion is failing at anything. I do wish they'd do more with the Eclipse line, and I'm getting impatient waiting for the Apu Trilogy (reportedly coming in 2015).
