WSJ says no retina air this week, they are usually pretty accurate, grain of salt tho...
Finally having the opportunity to respond to this....

Not surprised by this news. In fact, based on many reports I think it was a given
that no 12" Retina Macbook Air would surface this year based on the delays with
chip manufacturing.

That being said, there are actually two sites I have read rumors from that are saying
an announcement is coming tomorrow. However, I don't believe it. I think the new
iPad Air 2 and the Retina iMac are going to be the two stars.

Yeah, perhaps Apple will surprise us with "One more thing..." but I just can't see
the new Macbook Air being ready by year's end.

Yeah, Digitimes doubled down and said it will happen today, I didn't link that because: Digitimes. I don't think they are right but we'll see. If they are wrong let's put a moratorium on ALL Digitimes rumors for the foreseeable future =p If they are right I will eat crow.

Listen...

The both of us are praying this will happen today.

Apple Store is now down. So, at least there will preordering opportunities today.

See you in a few hours.

For the record, the Apple Store goes down for keynotes even if nothing is immediately available for order when they are complete. Just happened for the iPhone 6 keynote in fact...

Tell me if this story sounds familiar: Apple news sources report extreme makeover of widely beloved product that removes some signature features making existing owners extremely wary. Current owners swear "no way would I move to that smaller system, it will be harder to use, removes functionality I HAVE TO HAVE and won't last as long on a charge because the battery is gonna be so much smaller and F NO am I changing out all of my cables.

Sigh.

I hear you.

But we are still going to buy it.

I'm ditching my 2012 15" Retina MBPRO for this baby.

Just for portability

It's going to be a hard call if the 13" survives. Ideally I'd like to have both a 13" air for work stuff and a 15" Razor for gaming on the go but the limited amount of travel I do these days does not justify that cost. I'm going to take a hard look at the 12", I really want bigger screens, but we'll see if it makes sense or not.

I'll stick with my 13" MBP. It's heavier and non-retina but it's also bigger, has 16GB RAM, a SSD and I still use the built in SuperDrive frequently.

You Luddites, clinging to your laptops...join the the future...switch to an iPad... :D

Ok, seriously, Though I'm no longer a home laptop user, I'm curious what's coming out next. I sometimes wish I could go freelance to have an excuse to buy sexy Apple laptops for work :)

I realize you were only joking, but alas, I wish I could just use an iPad when

on the road.

One of the things I do most on HTF is post press releases. It requires constant

cutting and pasting. Yes, the iPad does that, but it does not format the content well

and most of the time I am having the hassle of connecting to a web version of a site.

There's nothing easier than working on a laptop.

If I was ever cash strapped, I would buy the best Apple laptop money could buy and

use it exclusively. When I am at home, I would connect it to a 27" (or larger) desktop

monitor.

I wonder if it's worth just buying a 13" Air now before the 12" Retina model is announced.

Do you think I would be shooting myself in the foot by doing that?

So far, I am not impressed that these Macbook Airs max out at 8GB memory. I would want at least 16GB.

I am just saying...

smaller screen.

Losing ports.

The only saving grace will be if Apple allows more than 8GB of memory to be installed.

Otherwise, outside of the retina screen, it almost looks like a step down.

...but I'll wait it out.

Ditching MagSafe, no full sized USB, having to choose between charging and using a USB device if you can find any USBc devices, wall-to-wall keyboard... There's too much wrong with this.

I hear ya :) I have the good fortune of not having a work laptop, which dramatically reduces my carry-on weight and size. And my personal travel needs are better met with an iPad than a macbook air, so I've gone back to a desktop mac (with my 2007 MBP coming to an untimely end last Fall). But I understand that most pro work is better done on a laptop; and even many personal needs are better matched to a full computer than a keyboardless table.

Yep, that's exactly the existing owner lizard brain nervousness I was talking about. =) I am with you on all fronts Clinton, something just doesn't make sense here. The only conclusion I can make, like all of the past Apple big changes, is: we need to be patient and learn the full story. Siracusa has posited that the power adapter is going to become the USB hub or that there will be some kind of other docking solution. Wireless charging could be a possibility too I suppose.

It's way too early to pronounce judgement.
