Am looking for a reasonably complete database of all DVD's and Blu-rays that sport directional soundtracks (i.e. dialog coming from left, center and right according to the actors' position on the screen.) I know that a large number of the 20th Century-Fox releases from the early to mid fifties had these tracks, but have they survived the move to video? Has anyone created such a list?

Many thanks!

Directional dialogue is a favorite of mine for listening. Well of the top of my head I can list these and I gather many more but very uncommon with many feature films today.1 The King and I (1956) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.0 MS

2 Forbidden Planet (1956) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

3 South Pacific (1958) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

4 Spartacus (1960) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

5 West Side Story (1961) laserdisc DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

6 Lawrence of Arabia (1962) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

7 My Fair Lady DVD (1964)
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

8 Doctor Zhivago DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

9 The Sound of Music (1965) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

10 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) (laserdisc and AC-3 and DVD MGM region 1 out of print version only)
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

11 Ice Station Zebra (1968) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

12 The Towering Inferno (1974) laserdisc DVD bluray
Stereophonic dtsHDMA 5.1 MS

13 The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) DVD subtle use on the remixed for DVD
Dolby Stereo 5.1 SS

14 Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) laserdisc DVD
Dolby Stereo TrueHD 5.1 SS

15 Superman the movie (1978) first edition VHS NTSC letterbox Laserdisc
Dolby Stereo (the DVD HD-DVD bluray waste of time you won't hear the subtle dialogue pans to stage left/right)
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

16 Alien (1979) laserdisc and AC-3 DVD bluray
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

17 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) laserdisc DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

18 Willow (1988) DVD bluray (sigh bluray typical Lucas tamping. I'd stick with DVD as that would be closet to theatrical)
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

19 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) laserdisc DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

20 The Abyss (1989) DVD Laserdisc
Dolby Digital 5.1 MS

21 Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) (the bluray is faulty mix don't waste your time with it best version is the SE directors edition DVD)
Dolby Digital 5.1

22 Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) laserdisc DVD bluray
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS dtsHDMA 5.1 SS

23 Backdraft 1991DVD Laserdisc bluray
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS dtsHDMA 5.1 SS

24 Hook (1991) DVD

25 Toy Story (1995) laserdisc AC-3

26 Mission to Mars (2000) DVD Dolby Digital 5.1-EX dialogue in one of the scenes makes a full circle pan around while the crew watch/listen to update delayed mission broadcast.
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

27 Monster’s Inc (2001) DVD
Dolby Digital 5.1-EX SS

28 The Thing From Another World 1951 DVD (colour stereo version sounds best in Dolby pro-logic so you hear the centre and left/right pans.
Dolby 2.0

29 GRAVITY bluray Dolby mix in dtsHDMA 5.1 perhaps the best use of dialogue panning I have listened to in decades. Dialogue pans around all directional channels and with PLIIx switched ON will pan right behind you.
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS dtsHDMA 5.1 SS

30 TITANIC (1997) subtle dialogue pans if your listening out for them across the stage channels. (don't bother with bluray I can't even watch it with the colour being tampered with that pulls me out of the film. THX Laserdisc AC-3 or THX DVD is closer to the theatrical ship of dreams with proper colour.
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

31 AVATAR (2009) subtle dialogue pans if your listening out for them across the stage channels.
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS dtsHDMA 5.1 SS

32 ALIENS (1986) subtle dialogue pans if your listening out for them across the stage channels.
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS

33 Logan's Run (1976) lots of directional dialogue panning going on listen out for it with matched EQ LCR or matrix in some Lc Rc with two Dolby PL IIx z using the Lt-Rt inputs will spread the panned sound effects music and dialogue pans across the 5 speakers for lesser cost.
Dolby Digital 5.1 TrueHD MS Laserdisc AC-3 will be the same even thou I don't own it, gut sound listening years instinct.

34 ALIEN 3 (1992) dialogue pans can be heard though the film across LCR and some subtle ones on the split surrounds as screaming voices or yelling.
Dolby Digital 5.1 SS dtsHDMA 5.1 SS

35 STAR WARS Episode III Revenge of the Sith (2005) subtle dialouge pans, but you must use your Jedi listening to hear it!
dtsHDMA 5.1 SS dtsHDMA 6.1 ES

36 STAR WARS Episode VI Return of the Jedi (1983) CBS/FOX lettterbox laserdisc is where you'd hear the now rare subtle dialouge pans that was centred on the CAV THX laerdisc. Lucas has it for diloaue pans? Yet he wants a few of them in Episode I II. But who wants to hear Jar, Jar panned seeing him is just as worse. Some other subtle ones heard in STAR WARS (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) with some snowtrooper voice panned to stage left.

37 Raising Cain (1992) rented this years ago and I can recall the dialouge panning around inside Cain's head that was circling around the 4 PL directional channels.
Dolby Stereo

38 Hallow Man (2000) subtle dialogue pans if your listening out for them across the stage channels when we can't see him? We can hear his voice over stage LR.

39 The Shadow (1994) rented this on VHS years ago and I seem to recall the shadow voice panning around. Might get the dts Laserdisc the bluray captures look DNR. (Dialogue No Replacement).

40 Surf's Up (2007) DVD region 2, surfing cool penguins listen out carefully for the dialogue panning. Surf's Up, was the last SDDS 8channel release of 2007.
Dolby Digital 5.1

A good one, for the wrong reasons...VHS of The Nightmare Before Christmas.Front channel is swapped. So, characters visually entering from the right, audibly enter from the left.I've never bought the movie on any other format to know if they fixed it.

Yes, I know that.
You could make a switch so that you need only press it and it will rerevse without getting behind the equipment, I forget how to do it now? Has I haven't had it connected for years, where it was so uncommon at the time but annoying when you get that film you like and have to reverse RCA phone leads on Front LR Surround LR. Clifhanger (1993) bluray is revesred on all 4 channels. STAR TREK IV (1986) is reversed on the split surrounds only on the DVD original motion picture collection.

First Blood (1982) remastered Laserdisc has reversed Dolby Lt-Rt.

Thanks for the list. I know that Dolby mixes on videos have wiped out a lot of perfectly good directional soundtracks, and I'm hoping future re-issues will reinstate them. Regarding #28...I hadn't realized this was colorized, or that they messed with the mono track like that.

Its not all that bad there is still the original.

I'll be playing The Thing From Another World B/W Mono and colour Stereo on Halloween Night with Halloween and The Thing.

Skipping though cable channels and I noticed that Watership Down (1978) Dolby Stereo, has dialogue rabbit panning.

Such a sad film makes you cry.

Fantasound and Perspecta Sound were both directional.
What he means is directional dialogue, the old 50's-60's gimmick of ramming one voice onto each individual magnetic track depending on what position of the proscenium they're on to create a wide soundstage. While it worked pretty well at the height of Cinemascope mania in the mid-50s, the decline of the 70mm format and Hollywood's growing habit of just making a single 4-track mix and smearing it into the other two front channels in the late-60s and early-70s made this gimmick increasingly poor quality. Hence Dolby's decision to make Star Wars' mix center dialogue with music and effects only in far left, right, and surround with those unnecessary center left and right speakers outputting a single low frequency bass channel.

As far as I know the last movie to make extensive use of directional dialog was Damnation Alley.

I bet there are lots and lots of them. One I can think of off the top of my head is Billy Rose's Jumbo. The other Doris Day musicals from that period probably have that too.

Perspecta and Fantasound were not magnetic to my knowledge. Perspecta was encoded in the optical track and de-coded by a special stand alone unit. Perspecta even showed up in the optical tracks of 16mm.
