External IP address is not as fast as home IP address (1 Viewer)

My situation can be described as: my DLNA streaming video works magnificently at home but when it's on an external IP address, you know, your Public IP address that displays every time you go onto whatismyip.com it seems to have trouble with the video. I have diagnosed that there is nothing wrong with the video file in general. It's my network. I'm trying to access my home network from a university connection, but instead the video sometimes creates artifacts. It stops for buffering then when its playing again it leaves behind pixelated artifacts from the position where it started to lag. My home connection is on a DHCP wireless connection provided by Comcast. The device I'm trying to access my video files from is a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2. My question is if the situation I just described, with the external network being not as powerful as the home network, is it normal or is there something very wrong with my connection? The video is coming in through the firewall, so that is a good sign. The video files I'm trying to stream are 1080p hi res video files. Am I putting too much work on the external network, which is why my external connection is not as fast?

Generally speaking, internet connections are not fast enough for this. Can you measure your upload speed at home? Remember, even the slowest home network is 100mbps upload/download on wired connection and approx. 35 up/down on wireless. I'd be surprised if your home internet connection has more than 5-10mbps of upload, which is not enough for 1080p video.

Dave is more than likely correct. An old slow home WiFi can connect at 54mbps (that's megabit, not megabyte, 54/8 = not quite 7 megabytes per second), while most likely your Comcast upload speed (IE how fast Comcast will allow your house to send data out) is probably closer to 10-15mbps. utter garbage, but that's Comcast for you.It doesn't matter how fast of a connection you have at school - the weakest link in the chain will always determine max transfer speeds, and in this case it will likely be your Comcast upload rate.

You'd be amazed how often people think that they will actually get 54 megabits from their wireless. In my experience, 35 is more average.

Doesn't matter if you have 100mbps from Comcast if you're at a university you're probably going to have issues. The reason is your connection is most likely being shaped or prioritized by the university. Streaming video is the most demanding service on most pipes so expect a low priority or heavy shaping. A 1080p video is going to require a lot of bandwidth which I wouldn't expect you to get in that setting.
