Television's favorite historical romp guilty pleasure returned tonight. The first 15 minutes of the episode frustrated me, since it was either an illusion or an enormous cop out. After that, though, it was back to more of the same. Which in this case, isn't really a bad thing.Timothy Busfield as Benjamin Franklin was an inspired bit of casting.

I was wondering what was going on during the opening moments and then decided that it was either a time jump, or an illusion. Despite that moment of confusion on my part, I was also pretty happy with how it picked up. The series felt like it didn't miss a beat once the illusory beginning had concluded.

Interesting choice to have the horseman regenerate (in spirit form?) a head. The robotic terminator-like horseman of the first season always felt constrained in terms of storytelling and now with this augmentation of the character's abilities this should give the writers more freedom to flesh out (so to speak) this character.

One other moment of confusion involved the Crane doppelganger in purgatory. Not that there would be one, that was expected but it was portrayed by whom/what? Just one of Moloch's minions?

Very happy to see this back.

Yeah, the show continues to move along at a brisk pace, leaving some things unanswered like the Crane impersonator in Purgatory. Basically, you just need to go along for the ride and not think too hard about what comes across the screen. Normally I guess I would have a problem with that, but "romp" is a very good description of this show's MO.

Although it makes sense, the Shirtless Horseman is pretty buff!

Interesting bit of thirtysomething synergy, considering the episode was directed by Ken Olin.

Random observations...

That Kindred guy is going to come in handy. I loved some of the shots of him squaring off with the Headless Horseman. The snarling (?) shot as they crossed axes was terrific.

The new sheriff is almost as annoying as 'Sir' on Castle.

The show just continues to drive forward at a breakneck pace.

Looks like Captain Irving just went from the frying pan into the fire. Great final sequence with the pen and contract.

Edit: One other thought to add. Loved Crane's reactions and commentary inside the Savings and Loan. Very topical.

John Noble is wonderful, and it's even more fun when he's playing a villain.

Hate the new sheriff. Hope she crosses paths with the horseman and gets dispatched pretty quickly.

I like the way Sakina Jaffrey is playing the sheriff, though. Usually these characters that are created to get in our protagonists' way are played as angry hard asses. Jaffrey is playing Sheriff Reyes as calm and reasonable, which gives the character a Nurse Ratched-y vibe that's if anything even more infuriating.

I was kind of hoping that Jenny would take the shot. :)

I seriously want to fast forward through the scenes with Sheriff Reyes. Hopefully they are going to bring her character around to Team Ichabod.

My issue with the new Sheriff is that it has been done countless times, and I hoped for a little better from this show (not that it is groundbreaking itself). Indeed, we saw this last season. As soon as the Sheriff sees the reality of the situation, she will come around (I assume), so why not just cut to the chase? What would be really interesting is a new Sheriff that completely buys into the supernatural right away--sort of like a Fox Mulder-type. That would genuinely surprise.

Ichabod's opening speech in tonight's episode was a thing of beauty.I like Hawley, and I like the vibe he adds to the show. Sort of a mercenary Indiana Jones meets the Winchester brothers. But I was scratching my head a bit about all of the time the episode spent on establishing his skeptism; this is a character who used mystical means to capture a coin with a biblical curse just an episode ago. He's clearly got a lot of knowledge about the occult and presumably has tracked down plenty of magical objects in the past. Just a strange choice to pull a Dana Scully on him.The brilliance of casting John Noble as the Horseman of War is that he allows little moments of humanity to filter in. They're a frustrating nuisance to the character, but they still make him far more interesting than your usual mustache twirling villain.

The actor who played Sheriff Corbin's son could have been Clancy Brown's son.

For some reason, I just can't get into this series this season. I have five episodes on my DVR ready to view and I just can't get into the mood of watching them.

To those watching the second season, how is it compared to last season?

I think it's just as good. This is one of those shows that is just flat out fun. I love the mythology. Sure there's some things that make you scratch your head but overall it's an enjoyable romp.

The episodes seem to be getting stronger as the season progresses. I haven't watched "Deliverance" yet, but "And the Abyss Gazes Back," was my favorite of the season so far.

I am tired of the Katrina story, and find myself  every time Ichabod mentions George Washington (which seems to be at least once every episode).

Get rid of Katrina, give more screen time to John Noble, and get over GW, and I think I'd enjoy it more.

Started binge watching this on Halloween.. All caught up now.

It's an interesting National Treasure/ X-files mash-up, and I like Noble's character.

I just wish they'd quit sending Katrina back and forth, that the new Sheriff gets killed or at least marginalized (hated her in House of Cards, as well), and that they stick in more 'story arc' shows and less 'creature of the week' stuff (the same problem X-Files wrestled with).

I guess the show has dropped in ratings compared to last year. Producers are talking about making the show less serialized. I haven't had a chance to watch much of the season. What kind of problems have there been?

They need to lose the Katrina character and the "love triangle" between Katrina, Ichabod and the headless horseman. The main thrust of the story needs to be the witnesses vs. Horsemen. The Katrina story pulls the focus from the main plot and drains the energy from the show.

Fewer references to George Washington and Ichabod's revolutionary past would also be welcome. We get it. He's displaced out of his time. We don't need constant reminders.

Honestly I wish they would lose the Katrina character, as there's not a whole lot of on-screen chemistry between her and Ichabod. Now Ichabod and Lt. Mills is a different story. Love their chemistry together.
