Hello everybody,

This is my first post here. I registered specifically to ask you nice folks this noob question. I hope I am in the right category to do so. Here I go.
I recently bought the Samsung flagship when it comes to 4K TVs, the UE65HU8500T. Now I'm in the market for a good home cinema system and because I am a noob I would like it to be "all in a box". Now from what I could read from the Internet, Samsung has a nice system with good reviews although a bit pricey, the HT-F9750W.
Now I know 4K disks and BluRay players will be released late 2015, so one year from now. HT-F9750W is capable of 4K upscaling and "shakes hand" well with my tv but will it play 4K disks or will I have to buy another system in less than a year just to have the real 4K playback experience?
I was just on the phone with Samsung technical support and they told me because it outputs HD content upscaled to 4K then it will be able to read 4K disks when they will become available.
I have my doubts about this and I think they were just trying to put me at ease and buy their £1300 product, but I might be wrong. What do you think?

Thank you for your answers!

As I already stated I don't have much knowledge in this field. I enjoy a good image and a good sound but I don't know how to build it and I don't think I have the time to do it anyway. That's why I go for the HTiB solution and my markers are the hopefully honest reviews out there which all point out that HT-F9750W is good but expensive. I haven't seen it anywhere listed as cheap. But that doesn't mean you are wrong so I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction.

In a nutshell, no. Current BD players will not be able to process the future 4K discs. There was some talk at one time about possible firmware updates that would allow it but that went by the wayside. The 4k players will be backwards compatible to standard BD discs.

Add his point to mine...The universal hatred/disgust of HTiB is that they are throw away.If you bought that, once you wanted to upgrade anything; speakers, playback unit...you throw the entire thing away. Start over.If you go my route...you use your current BD player...let the TV scale the image. Then when 4K arrives...you simply swap players.

No problem. I have an HTIB as well (a Panasonic SC-BTT370) which suits my purposes fully. I wanted/needed wireless rear speakers, and an all-in-one system and it's been very good for me and my family. I have no desire to have separates unless I ever have a dedicated media room (which I won't as there are priorities in my life beyond home theater). For my living room set-up, it's worked perfectly and my family and I are quite satisfied. And since I have no desire to dance the "upgrade to 4K" dance until I absolutely have no other choice, it will last me for a while.

On this subject, as with most, to each his own.....

Thank you for your answers. I will definitely consider your options schan1269. I just got an email from Samsung from a different guy than the one I spoke with today. Here is what he wrote:
Hello this is Heba, a member of the Samsung Online Support Team, and I am going to be more than happy to respond to your email today.
I tried to contact you by phone in order to quickly assist you with your issue; however I was unable to reach you.
Unfortunately, the technical specifications of the device specifies that it up scales to 4K, so any update for the device will be within the software not the hardware.
If you have any further questions or inquiries, please don't hesitate to contact or email us and we will be more than happy to assist you again anytime.

This is the second Samsung representative telling me it will need just a software update.
Are they lying through their teeth?

My opinion.....they can either do a firmware upgrade to 4k and let you keep your existing system. OR, they can leave your unit unsupported after 4k comes along and make you have to purchase an all-new unit. Hmmmm......IMO, that's what the push to 4k is all about, planned obsolescence of existing TV's/BD players, etc, to entice people who just spent thousands upgrading to 1080P to buy all new equipment. No different than Apple not making iOS8 not work with older devices...you want iOS8, you need to buy a new iPhone.

Where are you reading that a firmware update will take it from...4K scaling.To...Native 4K.He is specifically telling you that that is never going to happen.

That response is one of the most poorly written I have ever read.

What (I believe) that person was trying to say, is that the HARDWARE part of the player is only capable of upscaling to 4k. While the software can be updated, a software update is not capable of magically making the player output native 4k - that would require a hardware update (hence the 'unfortunately' in their response).

Even if this is not the case, I agree with the other posters - you can't take the "cheap" route and expect remain on the bleeding edge of technology (which is what 4k is currently).

If convenience trumps quality and expandability for you (and you're willing to 'start over' when 4k becomes more mainstream), then opt for the HTiB now. If you really want a well-performing system, you need to invest some $$.

Moderator hat here: I'd like to echo Jason's sentiment and note that kind of response is NOT what we pride ourselves on here at HTF. Welcome to HTF Bogdan, I hope the other responses have helped you with your question.

Other Sam: Lighten up a lil, k bud?

Thank you for the welcome Sam Posten! :)

Well, I thought the email was confusing just for me as a non-native English speaker. Glad to hear it wasn't just me. :) I asked him for clarification in a follow up email and will post the reply here.

But let's discuss the other option of building my own system which I initially thought will be cheaper. Now I know it will be more expensive because I don't currently have a BluRay player. I have just moved into a new flat, into a new country and I kind of start over. It's worth noting that the building's walls are quite thin so I won't be able to use a high volume without bothering my neighbours. Unfortunately I was misled by the letting agent that specifically told me the flat is soundproof. Bloody scammers! So I will probably not stick around too much in this place.

Now considering this, is it still worth spending even more money than anticipated for a sound system I clearly can't use at its fullest? Also, I am not much of an audiophile. I will mostly use the home cinema for movies.

By the way. I picked that AVR for two reasons...It has Bluetooth to connect phones/tablets etc to for music. And the HDMI spec isn't finalized. Meaning when/if you upgrade to 4k...you might also need a newer AVR (everybody buying an AVR this year is in the same boat. One reason, even with Atmos, I expect one of the worst years ever in AVR sales)

I don't think consumers are aware of that as much as you think Sam. Those in the know might be hesitant but that's gotta be a small part of the pie. I remain skeptical that Atmos is going to really open any kind of floodgates tho, we'll see.

Bogdan, quite welcome. I think you will find a pretty consistent disdain for HTiB at HTF's core audience. There's some really good ones (check my review of KEF's if you can) but overall a little bit of sleuthing can build a much higher quality with better long term growth potential than any one size fits all kit. The kits serve a purpose tho, for people with more money than willingness to research and buy from multiple vendors, but you don't seem to fit that mold. They are marketed at the lazy consumer not the enthusiast.

I think the only player that might do 4K with a software firmware update is the Playstation 4, at least i hope so, certainly Sony will be pushing 4K next year and the PS4* is their flagship games console, i am confident it will play 4K blu ray discs.

*X Box One should also be capable of a firmware upgrade to play 4K blu ray discs.

Thank you schan1269 for your suggestions.
I've done my homework and I checked out everything you said.
I found Onkyo TX-SR333 at £300 here in UK.
BIC America speakers are not easily found in UK so that is not a good option for me.
Both you and Sam Posten suggested KEF speakers which are available here. I had a look at their website and T305 System looks like something I would want. It costs £1,700.
Now I need a BluRay Player and I think I should look for one with 4K up-scaling because I noticed a sound delay when my TV plays HD content from Sky channels and I have to adjust it from Sky Box's settings or TV's settings. Problem is there is not always the same delay and setting it for one channel makes it worse for other channels. I am no expert but this may be caused by the image processing required for up-scaling therefore I think this will be solved by feeding it 4K video directly. Therefore I would consider Samsung's BluRay Player BD-F7500 3D with 4k up-scaling at £200.
To sum it all up, all three combined (AVR, Speakers and BluRay Player) total at £2,200.
Would this be a good setup?
