Can somebody enlighten me here, please. I noticed the newest Pioneer Elite BDP 88 has 2 XLR audio outs for L & R channels. Is this simply for somebody that uses their BDP as a decoder and sends their audio to an amp in a 2.1 setup? I'm a little confused.Schan,Added "88" so we all know which BD player.

There are people out there with components which need the analog out in order to function. That could be an older tv or receiver, or something that is hooked up alongside a digital connection like wireless headphones.

It's not being released until December. It's the Pioneer Elite BDP-88FD. It's their flagship model. It has 2 XLR audio outs for left & right channels. Just seems strange to me that you would spend $2,000 on a BDP and need pre-outs.

Why?XLR could mean it has gain/volume control.If it doesn't have gain/volume...they aren't pre-outs.And...there are pre-amps with XLR inputs.

What has gain/volume control? The BDP or the amp it's going to?
Amps don't have volume controls.Preamps and integrated amps do.Some CD, DVD, cassette decks, reel to reel, VHS, BD, laser disc...and everything else that has ever been produced...have volume controls(when it is on an amp...it is called gain control, like on every single powered subwoofer). On this particular BD player, there is no volume control on the remote(except for the one intended for TV).So...it is simply XLR output. Preout is not what it is.

Wow. Reading that "other forum"...$2000 for a BD player(with 4K announced) that doesn't have MCH outputs but it does have..."Disc tray with anti-vibration paint"...What?Maybe this is why Onkyo bought Pioneer. Pioneer has no clue anymore...(But I can't wait till I see one connected with just an HDMI)

I mean...I just don't really understand anyways. If you're buying a $2000 BDP, then you probably have a receiver or maybe even a receiver with pre outs? That's what I don't get.

One has zero to do with the other.

Since you have no clue...The DAC(that would be the Sabre ESS) is only used for the analog outputs. So, if you buy a BD player and only hook it up with HDMI, coax or Toslink...you aren't using the DAC...and hence why cheap DVD/BD players are...uh, cheap. They don't have a DAC, even a lousy one.

The BDP has XLR out. They can be fed to a preamp and then to an amp. If you wanna go that route, then you go HDMI in to your receiver (with the BDP) and boom, there is your output...orYou go HDMI in to your receiver and then use the pre outs on your receiver to the preamp. You bypass the XLR outs all together on the BDP.I know the XLR outs and the receivers pre outs are different (one is gain control and the other is volume control), but what am I missing here?

Before I get snappy...Sabre ESS is like getting a blow job from a horny Heidi Klum for your music.Let's say you got a bargain bin AVR. Its DAC is a street walking crackwhore that cost $5.Now lets say you have a pre-1984 king ding aling preamp. It doesn't have a DAC.A lot of tube amps have XLR inputs. If your tube has volume pots(most tube amps do)...BDP 88 + tube amp = aural sex.

What are some AVR's that don't use ESS Sabre DAC?
Uh, wow. Do you even know what a DAC is/does?The appropriate question is...How many AVR use this DAC that was just introduced 2(3?) years ago?My guess 10?

Digital To Analog Converter. Yes, I know what a dac is/does. I'm sorry the question wasn't phrased to your liking. Thanks for the response.
