Does anyone here use Phillips hue lighting? Or a similar controllable system? How does it work? I see the starter pack is $200 which only includes bulbs. Do they work in regular sockets? What applications have you put it to in your homes? I know Phillips once made a sunrise alarm clock. Is that the same as phillips hue? The website has left me with more questions than answers. Thanks!

Yes, the Hue works in a normal light socket. Each bulb connects wireless to the hub that comes in the starter kit, then you can connect a number of bulbs to the hub (cant remember the max, I wanna say 20, im sure its on the website). The bulbs that come in the starter kit are pre-programmed to work with the provided hub and any others you bought you'd have to go through the process of connecting them (which is pretty simple).

As far as application goes, there are a number of things. Yes, you can put them on a timer where they wake you up slowly in the morning and you can set them to all dim down at a certain time. You can use them far ambient lighting being that they can be set to many many different colors. The HUE allows you to get pretty creative.

I too researched these some time ago I didnt end up buying them. Their price is a bit too high for what you get right now, but im sure in the future this is something I will own.

If your looking for an ambient lighting set up, their are much better alternatives that allow you to be creative, but the HUE would compliment them nicely. I went with LED stripes that run off of a remote. Whether you want the HUE or not really comes down to what your trying to accomplish and how much your willing to pay.

O I forgot to mention, they have the HUE lighting setup at the Apple stores, some of them even have them on display for you to try. I saw them while I was on a vacation over this past winter.
