Season six of Graham Yost's six-season meditation on Elmore Leonard lawman Raylan Givens doesn't premiere until January 2015, but news is already starting to leak out about the final season.

Season five was easily the weakest season yet, but this show has always been strongest in its even seasons, so let's hope it goes out at its peak.

TVLine is reporting that Garret Dillahunt and Sam Elliott will recur during the show's final season.

Dillahunt, one of the best character actors working today, will play:
Walker, a special ops veteran who handles security for a quasi-legal businessman. The combined irritants of Raylan and Boyd will bring to the surface the monster lurking beneath his cold exterior.

Elliot, a screen legend, will play:
legendary Kentucky gangster Markham, who returns from exile to win back his empire and his lost love, Katherine Hale (played by Mary Steenburgen). He’ll butt heads with Raylan and Boyd and even Katherine, who secretly believes that he is the rat who brought down her husband.

Sounds great. Last season was something of a dud but the show will undoubtedly end with a bang. I figured Steenburgen for a larger role.

Fantastic casting.

I eagerly await the return of this series. It's no Breaking Bad (what is?), but it definitely is one of the best things on television today.

Also, not terribly pleased that my wife believes Olyphant is "hot walking sex," but hey, we all can't be Olyphant.

He is, indeed. :D He was so weird in "Go", but he's come a long way.

I'm sad so many of "my shows" are ending. Boyd Crowder has turned out to be such a fascinating character, thanks to Goggins. I hope to see him in something else soon, since we also had to say goodbye to Venus Van Dam recently.

I'm pumped about this. While I don't want the final season to turn into a reunion tour, there are a few characters (like Loretta McCready and Dewey Crowe) that I hope pop up at least once. It'd also be nice if we got a bit more Winona than we have in the previous couple seasons. Not sure what Natalie Zea's other commitments were when this was filming.

Premieres tonight! I'm actually happy that the State of the Union is preempting or pushing to repeats many of my network shows, because I just have too much television bunched into Tuesdays at the moment.

Excellent premiere, better than all of season five put together. Raylan's back to being a bad ass, Boyd's back robbing banks. But somehow it all feels like it's coming to an end. The whole storyline with the Florida Crowes felt like a show stalling for time. This premiere felt like a show with a very strong sense of where it is headed.

I don't know what the hell is going on with Garret Dillahunt's character, but color me very intrigued. There was more Burt Chance in her performance than I expected, but with a very dangerous undercurrent to his amiability.

I knew Dewey Crowe was done for as soon as he mentioned Mexico to Boyd. This death wasn't shocking, but the inevitability of it made that scene nearly unbearable to watch. And Boyd's explanation to Carl mirrored his explanation to Devil in the pilot of why he shot the white white supremacist.

It also brings back the danger and unpredictability of Boyd from the pilot. When he's sitting there, watching Ava sleep, we have absolutely no idea what he's thinking. The civilized Boyd, the Boyd that had the detente with Raylan, is gone. Both sides are all in now.

And then the closing scene, with Raylan going to Art so as to be persuaded to stay on the straight and narrow path, at least as much as Raylan can. I feel like Art's warning to Raylan that this time he might not be on the winning side if it comes time to draw was also a warning to the audience, as well.

Score so far:

Boyd 1

Raylan 0

So long, Dewey, you glorious moron. You provided some of the greatest moments on the show. I really liked the way Raylan shoved your head into the steering wheel. (Didn't he also do that five years back?) OTOH, your bestest buddy, Dickie, was in the previews last night. I wonder how and when Boyd's gonna kill him, too?

Boyd now has direct (as opposed to hearsay) evidence against Raylan for conspiring in the death of Nicky Augustine. Although it's messy and could backfire against him, Boyd still has that card to play, and it could get Raylan in trouble, even if just enough trouble to keep the U.S. Marshals off his back. Given how poorly Raylan fared in the courts against Dewey Crowe (with Dewey skating twice), it could be enough to free Boyd while Raylan ends up behind bars.
