Now that this has been officially released, does anyone care to provide their impressions of the transfer? I would myself, except for the fact that my copy is on a 10 day journey from Amazon to Down Under. I can't find any reviews of it either.

My hope is the transfer is better than the cover artwork.....it looks like they did a random screen capture, slapped the title and stars names on it, and ran it through their local Office Depot scanner. I think Sean Connery's expression is actually a reaction to seeing this cover.

Unless they can come up with something better, I'd actually prefer they would use original poster art for these catalog releases....wouldn't this have looked better for The Offence?

Aren't there licensing costs associated with using original artwork? Anyway, fans won't let a cover deter them from a purchase, you can throw it away and/or make your own. Given the lack of retail outfits stocking catalog titles it's unlikely anyone unfamiliar with the title will even know it's out in the first place.

Someone asked someone from KINO regarding the cover art and he mentioned that they were not allowed to use the poster artwork. It seemed to be a licensing issue of some sort otherwise I am sure they would have. Kino have stayed very close to the poster artwork on most of their MGM releases. Will be curious to see what cover art the UK Blu will get.

I'm surprised that nobody's commented on this film, either its content or its transfer. No official reviews that I could find either. Sad really, because this movie has a great deal to offer in both departments.

I bought The Offence on release but set it aside for viewing when the right mood struck me - and you have to be in the right mood for this movie as it's quite gritty and dour. Last night I was in the right mood, and I was amply rewarded. Despite my earlier criticisms of Kino, and fears that they'd be another Olive, it turns out that this transfer is very good. Detailed, good colors, nice grain, no apparent digital manipulation; a proper step up from the DVD and worth the wait. I detected some mild color pulsing during some early outdoor camera pans within the first 10 minutes, but otherwise a good honest solid transfer.

On the content of the film itself, it's best left unspoiled for those who haven't seen it. The story is a British crime drama/psychological thriller, with plenty of food for thought. Suffice it to say that in my humble opinion, this is one of Sean Connery's best, if not the best, acting performances. The first five minutes are rather surreal and confusing, but after that the story settles into a nice straightforward pace, with a few twists.

Masters of Cinema will be releasing this film in Region B this year for those who can't play the Kino Region A locked disc. This movie is highly recommended.

I like this film a lot. As you said, it's not an easy viewing experience. I think I'll wait for the MoC release, though. Interesting fact is that probably the best and grittiest performances from Connery were elicited from Sidney Lumet, the other being The Hill (another difficult film to watch). Just dawned on me that I was a teen when I saw The Hill, and The Pawnbroker (another difficult Lumet film), and they have stayed with me all my life. What a great director he was!

Basically the film ends this way:

The last part of the film reveals what exactly happened in the room, between Connery's character (Detective Sergeant Johnson) and Baxter: their full conversation, Johnson's realization that he'd pretty much turned into the same kind of pervert he'd been fighting against all his career, Johnson asking Baxter to help him, Baxter laughing at him, then Johnson beats Baxter severely. The last scene is much the same as the one near the start of the movie, where the camera zooms in as he's pushing away the Policemen who've entered the room, with Johnson saying "God, God what have I done...".
