Anyone know who holds rights to "Incubus" (1966) starring William Shatner, and if a Blu-ray release may be under consideration at all for the near future? As some of you know, this is a legendary little horror/sci-fi film which was done in the rare artificial language called "esperanto". The film's cinematography was by future Academy Award-winner Conrad Hall. The film was believed lost to the ages until a print turned up in Paris, France in 1996. From this print a restoration, funded by the Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy), was performed and this was released on DVD in 2001. The movie was presented in 1.66:1 aspect ratio (or close to that), but the DVD was non-anamorphic.

First ALPHAVILLE (1965) now INCUBUS (1965), interesting.

Looking at the packaging literature (and I'm typing this at work) the original "standard" DVD edition was distributed by Winstar Video and Anthony Taylor and Contempo III Productions may be the parent licensor is also credited.

I am happy with the "standard" DVD release but if a quality high definition bluray edition is attempted I would (likely) support it.

This film was pretty much crafted by the first season (1963-64) THE OUTER LIMITS (ABC 1963-65) tv series production crew and I was thrilled to finally have access to it (as doubtless many others were).

On a "humourous" note one young unappreciative genre fan in reference to this ellusive screen treasure having been "lost" flatly responded after seeing INCUBUS (1965) "It should have stayed lost." Well, you can't please everybody.

Apparently the English subtitles are burned in...and no other source materials exist. Even the lone French print used for the WinStar DVD was just a lucky find...

Although Incubus remains a fascinating, one-of-a-kind film, would the battered and compromised sole surviving print significantly benefit from Blu-ray remastering?

Wish list is one thing; delusion another. This obscurity is already in "we should consider ourselves lucky" form on DVD.

A couple days ago, French Blu-ray label "Le Chat Qui Fume" posted on Facebook:

We are very pleased to announce the restoration of an almost lost film. INCUBUS by Leslie Stevens 1966 with William Shatner. A film, shot in Esperanto, almost lost since all the copies burned in a fire. All but 2! France being the only country where the film was shown, a damaged 16mm copy was found 20 years ago at the Cinémathèque. A DVD has been released following this discovery.

The second copy, a much better quality 35mm, was recently found by Emmanuel Rossi , which all fans of old film will know.
The film is in the hands of the ECLAIR PRESERVATION VANVES lab for a 4K scan and we should receive the files soon.
