I have problems with the tonight show since he took over, not that Leno was any great shakes, but Fallon's monologue is terrible, and his insistence to duet with everyone just wears on my nerves, how did this guy get this gig ?

I thought Johnny Carson was one of the true greats, whether it be hosting The Tonight Show or the Academy Awards -- and his Tonight Show format, with him and Ed McMahon in charge, was world class television. I was born in the US, moved to Australia as a kid, but remember seeing his show (as well as my mother's favorite, Joey Bishop's) and always heard and saw clips of the show over the years. The show was on nightly by satellite on the Nine Network down here from around 1983 for a couple of years, it returned on cable television in the early 2000s here when Jay Leno was hosting (I have seen mere minutes of his work on the show so can't offer any opinon)

I have two Johnny Carson Tonight Show boxsets on dvd, I have his 1950s television series, I even have the excellent PBS documentary on him on bluray -- so my opinion of Johnny is high, to say the least.

Down here, from March this year, the Tonight Show is on nightlyon one of the free to air digital channels at the great time of 7.40pm Monday to Friday (out of habit, I got straight to bed -- the show plays without commercials, hence I'm in bed at 8.20pm every night)

And Jimmy Fallon? I think he is terrific -- so is the band and everyone else who works on the show. I know they are looking at a younger demographic with this show and I think it all plays beautifully.

I don't know if the producers know this but it has many similarities with two landmark variety shows made in this country, "The Don Lane Show" (1975-1983) and "Hey Hey It's Saturday" (1971-1999, 2008-2009) with the uses of announcers (Jimmy Fallon's announcer would find a true soulmate with Don Lane's announcer and co-host Bert Newton, who is probably Australia's Johnny Carson and one of the true greats of world television with a career spanning nearly 60 years) and segments inviting viewer participation -- back then, usually the studio audience, these days Facebook and Twitter around the world.

For those who are tired of Jimmy already, give him time -- pretty sure Johnny Carson was in exactly the same situation after replacing Jack Paar -- personally, this show for me is one of this year's highlights.

Count me as another who really likes Jimmy Fallon. He is supportive in his humor instead of one-upsman (if that makes any sense). He comes across as a genuinely likable guy and I think that is why he gets guests that haven't done talks shows in years. It is because they know Jimmy will treat them with friendship and respect, not just try and make jokes at their expense.

I think the best thing about him is he truly seems to love what he his doing and is almost child-like in his enthusiasm. This might turn some people off but I find it nice for a change. There are plenty of jaded late night guys. It is nice to have someone who hasn't been beat-down yet.

I think of Fallon as a puppy and the others as old pit bulls.

I like Fallon and Kimmel. Different takes on schtick.Dave is still the faded king(Fallon and Kimmel know this). The one I don't care for is Conan. Great laughs, but his interviewing makes Sajak look good.Fallon in Indy for the SuperBowl was epic TV. Letterman sent him some bits.

I hadn't watched the Tonight show since Jay Leno took over. I changed my tune when Fallon arrived. He is a breath of fresh air and I like how he interacts a LOT more with his guests and the band etc. It is a much more energetic and entertaining show IMO.

Seth Meyers bores me to tears. I never enjoyed watching him on SNL either.

I was luck enough to see Johnny during a trip to LA in 1989 during Christmas week and he had Jimmy Stewart.

I like Dave and never watched Leno much. My neighbor told me about two weeks ago who is around my age and grew up watching Johnny as a kid.

He told me to give Fallon a try. I have been watching and I do see some of Johnny in this guy. I intend to keep watching and wonder what the ratings are now.

[threadfart]I'm just sorry to see G. P. and the Fergs go.[/threadfart] :)

Fallon definitely has a different, more "modern" style that appeals to a younger demographic. I don't love him or hate him. Sometimes he's hilarious, and sometimes he isn't.

Interesting how we all have such different opinions. Enjoyable to read.

Probably why there are 37 talk shows to choose from. :D We all have our favorites.
For those of you with BBCA, Graham Norton returns in a bit over a week. Easily one of my favorites. Rules are a bit looser on BBC and they can say things you'd never hear on the US shows. I hope as a tribute they repeat a Joan Rivers episode she did a few years back with Johnny Knoxville and Catherine Tate. Probably would have bleeped about 50% of it here in the US.

Have never really cared for Fallon; I find watching his act akin to reading a copy of a copy of something I used to enjoy reading. But I can certainly appreciate his role in keeping the institution of The Tonight Show vital for a younger generation.

I saw that ep and it was hilarious. Johnny Knoxville was almost on the floor laughing.

As an aside, Craig Ferguson is easily my favorite late night talk show host, and I'm really going to miss him on The Late, Late Show when he departs in December. If you look up the antonym of pretentious, you'll see a photo of Craig Ferguson.

Fallon's enthusiasm generates a lot of his appeal for me. But that enthusiasm is sort of a two-edged sword for me. Everything and everyone cannot be 'the best' or 'the greatest'. I honestly think his enjoyment of his profession and a genuine sense of friendliness is behind those comments but they do kind of take me out of the moment from time to time. Still, I've watched him for years and appreciate his humor and his energy. It doesn't hurt that his sidekick, Steve Higgins just kills me when he plays off of Fallon.

I have heard of the Johnny Carson Show though a scene in BRAINSTORM (1983). I have watched some shows on youtube in the past and I find Johnny Carson, to be relaxing.

While I never really enjoyed his era on SNL I do find him to be a bright comic, who is very enthusiastic about his work and wants his stars to shine I did enjoy his late night show however when he moved over to the Tonight Show he had to become much more mainstream an appeal to a wider audience and that is when he struggled he is changing things up he is trying to add new new bits and evolve it will just take time. New writers will help. . He does have the best band in late night, not only in their musical ass-kicking-ness but also in their participation in the show itself.

My wife and I took our older two daughters to see the show a month or so ago. It was a lot of fun. I like some of his segments. I do agree Seth Meyers is a bit boring for me.

On a side note. At our taping Fallon's parents were in the audience. They were in the back row. My daughter is knows Jimmy's cousin (she is 20). She said that he doesn't like having his family in the front row...too distracting. So he puts them in the back.

Craig should have stayed. If he took over for Dave...it would've been the greatest show nobody watched.
