Hello,

I want to setup a pair of speakers outside and run it from my AVR inside. Currently I have an Onkyo HT-R340. Usually I run my music from Apple TV (via HDMI) to my receiver. My receiver has options for speakers A, B or A+B. When I hooked up a a speaker to B and tried playing music through both A+B (inside and outside), I could barely hear B. I read that speaker B may have to be run from analog wiring (not HDMI). Could I just get an optical to analog wire? Or would getting a 2 channel A/B speaker selector w/volume control work and run all speaker wires (inside and outside) through that? This way I could just turn up B (outside speakers) to a high volume while keeping the inside speakers at a normal volume level.

Thanks everyone,

-Brady

Since you already use the AppleTV, you should be set up to create a wireless system outside, or approach a wired one differently.

For wireless I would use an Airport Express to stream to wherever you want, then just a little amp and some speakers. I use THESE amps all over the place at work and home. This way you get individual volume controls.

If your receiver had a zone 2, you could run a wire from it to the same amp and have individual volume controls, but it doesn't look lijke it has that. Volume between the two locations will always be a problem the way you are thinking of doing it.

BTW, you must have the wrong model number on your receiver, because that model doesn't have hdmi.

Hmm, okay, maybe I was thinking of the wiring wrong. I'll have to check when I get home. Maybe I have HDMI going to my TV and TV sound to the receiver, I can't remember.

If I do the airport express route how would that work? Would I be able to play the music inside through my stereo system and have the same music playing outside? Also, from what I saw on Airport Express, it only works with itunes or the itunes music app on my phone, can I use pandora from Apple TV?

You might have it set up that way, or the hdmi going to the TV and the optical audio output from the ATV going to the receiver.

I don't use Pandora, but I think you can send any audio you are listening to on the AppleTV to the Express using AirPlay. I don't know if I can verify that without a Pandora account. Maybe someone else has done it. Since you're using the ATV, I sort of thought you had your music in iTunes.

I love having this setup because I can put a system wherever I want, and I can take one outside, so long as it is within the range of the wifi network. You have the Express preconfigured, so you just plug it in and wait for it to boot.
