Michael Crichton's 1978 The Great Train Robbery is one of those films that just makes viewers smile, as it's a wonderful way to spend two hours.
Terrific performances, a quality tale based upon Mr. Crichton's own novel, a rousing score from Jerry Goldsmith, that in some ways harkens back to John Addison's work for Tom Jones, and at the top of the list for me, a brilliant turn from cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth, to whom the film is dedicated.
Anyone unfamiliar with Mr. Unsworth's work is advised to do some research, and very shortly will be recognizing films with his very special style within just a few frames.
It gives me great pleasure to offer my thoughts on this Blu-ray, for its a film that I love, and I'm thrilled with Kino's release.
Everything that might be desired in a Blu-ray representation of Mr. Unsworth's work is on screen. It appears that the image is derived from a very high quality IP, with real no damage, and just occasional minus density, which is no problem whatsoever. It just adds a bit of cinematic sparkle to the image, as it would have been seen in a theatre.
Very strong image, with a beautiful grain structure, great color, and importantly to the way the film was shot, proper shadow detail. The track is likewise, strong, sounding great in decoded 5.1.
