Pretty damn good review of the Apple Watch (Pros and Cons):

http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/hodinkee-apple-watch-review

I know, on this forum, I am the minority when it comes to wanting
wearables.

However, I was so impressed with what Apple did with their watch
that I switched from Android back to the iPhone.

I was really hoping Apple would fail. I love my Android phone.

However, not going to be a total loss.

Look forward to your comments and I hope that at least one of you
on this forum is planning to buy an Apple Watch.

I think the Apple Watch will sell relatively well for Apple. It might even be a big hit. However, it is not for me.

I am hoping that some company sees the value in a watch that does nothing more than display notifications from my phone (plus standard watch functions). Color display isn't necessary, B&W is fine as long as it is easy to read in all viewing conditions. I would image such a device would be cheaper, thinner and have better battery life than what we are currently seeing.

It will be interesting to see these devices and their technology develop over the next few years.

That review killed me. He had no criticism for the watch itself, as an aesthetic object. His only negative words were on the unknown future of smart watches: what's the point, will the work, and does anyone actually want them?

Alas, not me. But probably my wife, next year. :)

Things could change, but I'm currently planning to get one. I was impressed.

I think the watch will be a big hit. It's not for me right now but for those that are interested in such things, it's a darn good fit.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2014/09/dont-buy-the-apple-watch-version-1-0/Ars says early adopters take risks."We're not going to be so quick to judge the Apple Watch as a product category, at least not based on our blink-and-you'll-miss-it hands-on session. That said, you probably shouldn't buy the first one. The Apple Watch has promise, and it will have even more once actual people (and developers) can sink their teeth into it. But remember, this is a 1.0 product, and nearly all tech companies have a less than perfect track record when it comes to brand new releases. A quick look into Apple's past is no different, revealing that you rarely want to own the very first generation, version 1.0 iterations of the company's products. Apple's first tries are rarely bad, but they're almost never the company's best work."

Yeah, I am fully aware that I am buying a watch at ground floor.

I expect I'll be buying a new one every year or two until its perfected.

I thought you might be cognizant of the risks ;)But the article, obviousness aside, was a decent summary of Apple's v1 challenges.

To me the biggest risk with the watch (particularly the higher-end "Edition" models) is the expectation that watches and jewelry should last longer than a year or two. How much is an 18k Gold Apple Watch going to cost, and will the wearer be interested in updating it when faster processors or a new version of the OS is released?

Especially after Forstall left and the company shed a lot of its design skeuomorphism, I was surprised as just how traditionally watch-like the Apple Watch is, particularly the digital crown. It will be interesting to see if they can make traditional-looking watches become as disposable as they've made other digital devices.

The economics of the awatch especially interest me. Portable tech has 2-3 year life. Battery life gets you, if nothing else.Prices are going to have to come down fast to make this viable, I think. I have trouble seeing people buying a $399 iPhone and $349 (minimum) watch every two years.

Regarding pricing, I thought the Edition edition* were gold plated. Nope."There should be no confusion on that last part. The Apple Watch Edition is solid 18-karat gold, not gold-plated. I confirmed this with Apple last week. You can feel it when you try one on: the stainless steel watch is noticeably heavier than the aluminum Sport one, and the gold Edition models are noticeably heavier than the stainless ones."http://daringfireball.net/2014/09/apple_watch* Apple Watch Edition edition: stupidest Apple-product name ever?

I understand buying a $500 smartwatch for 2-3 yrs fun and games and personal efficiency. I understand buying a $20k fashion watch for a lifetime's, heirloom even, enjoyment.I can't grasp a $10k watch that is technologically obsolete in 12-24 months and discarded for a new one.Who wants a $10k gold iPhone 4 instead of a $300 composite iPhone 5s?If this pricing is accuratea) I don't grasp the wealth to make these purchasesb) Apple has a long-term plan implemented on day one, for the guts to be upgraded every two years for much less than the cost of a whole new watchc) My wife will only get the Sport edition

Ready to have your minds blown?

The most fun I’ve had over the past week is speculating with friends about how much the different tiers of Apple Watch are going to cost. One thing that is absolutely clear, to me at least: when Tim Cook said the starting price is $349, that’s for the aluminum and glass Sport edition. My guesses for starting prices:
[*]Apple Watch Sport (aluminum/glass): $349 (not a guess)
[*]Apple Watch (stainless steel/sapphire): $999
[*]Apple Watch Edition (18-karat gold/sapphire): $4999
[/list]
Set your expectations accordingly!

If Gruber's estimates are even remotely accurate, Apple is going to need to provide component updates without buying an entirely new watch. That, or I am grossly underestimating the disposable income of wealthy Apple fans who will happily throw away several thousand dollars every few years just to have the latest gold watch. The piece he linked to from Adam Fields about luxury products and the shift in Apple's thinking here was spot on, imho.
