Hello,
I'm a newbie, and this is my first home improvement project. I'm planning to setup a home theater in my basement. My basement is 22ft long by 15ft wide, and has a 8ft ceiling. I plan to place the projector screen on the 15ft wall, and have my seating around 13ft from the screen. I did some screen size calculations based on THX recommendations, and I came up with a 100" screen. Before doing the calculations, I was thinking of setting up a 120" screen - but now I wonder if installing such a large screen would leave space for my tower speakers, center and sub. and if it will be too low or too large for comfortable viewing.

What is your recommendation?

Also, I plan to mount a LCD TV on the 15ft wall and have the projector screen drop from the ceiling in front of the TV. I'm planning to get the EliteScreen Starling Tension Series electric screen, and pair it with the Epson 5030UB.

What are your thoughts on the screen? And how much gap do you suggest I leave so that the screen doesn't touch the TV?

Thanks.

Acoustically Transparent.
Thanks schan1269, but I am not constructing a dedicated home theater room. The wife would like it so that I can hide the projector screen and it instantly transforms into a living area (with large speakers). For more on my home theater open this thread. Therefore, I would like to stick to a regular dropdown projector screen with a TV behind it.

And you can do that easier with an AT screen.
Ah, an acoustically transparent electric screen. Makes complete sense - that way, I can have the center channel at ear level behind the screen. What screen would you recommend? Also, it shouldn't matter that the towers are exposed and the center is covered, right?

How much are you willing to spend?Da Lite perf are $1300-1800(100")Woven(preferred) are twice to 3 times that.
I was thinking of spending under a thousand bucks for the electric tension screen. But the cheapest 120" acoustically transparent screen I found is $1500.

And it makes a double display simpler.Caveat...You'll need either...A cover for the tv behind(so light bleeding through doesn't reflect back)...orBlack backing for the screen itself. My Screen Research ClearPix has backing on it for the same reason. There is a 50" plasma behind...

You make a good point. I guess I'll have to go for a regular non-acoustically transparent, electric tension screen and have the center channel at the bottom of the screen pointing upwards. I may still have to have a cover for the TV though.

What, of my post, means you can't do AT?If your TV is plastic or anti-glare glass...you won't (likely) need anything.Every...and that is an absolute...AT screen maker offers black backing. Most provide it free. If there is a fee, it isn't much.

I had a sample of Seymour XD and UF acoustically transparent screen material, the XD was very good, i did not like the UF material, if you are good at DIY then you can save a fortune by building the screen yourself, a link to the material below.

Since I won't be able to have the center channel at ear level (due to the TV), I'm thinking of dropping the AT screen idea and just have the center channel below the screen pointing towards the listener.
