The Mindy Project Season Two DVD Review

The Mindy Project: Season 2 prescribes comedy on DVD with the second season of the NBC comedy featuring Mindy Kaling. The 3-disc collection presents all 22 episodes in anamorphic picture and 5.1 sound, along with some deleted scenes and a gag reel. The series is likely to appeal more to a female audience, particularly fans of Kaling’s comic stylings, as it examines the romantic hijinks faced by the main character while she develops both her medical career and her personal life. For fans of the show, and of Kaling, this will be an easy purchase. More casual viewers may want to try watching a few episodes first, when the series returns on September 17th.

The Production Rating: 3/5

The Mindy Project: Season 2 continues the romantic comedy created by comedian Mindy Kaling, as her character, Dr. Mindy Lahiri, grapples with professional and personal issues in a New York OB/GYN office. With the main character drawn from Kaling’s mother’s experiences, the series shows Kaling boldy examining issues of romantic intimacy, as well as dealing with weight, personal appearance and other areas that comedies don’t normally play for more than a gag. This isn’t for everyone – my instincts say this material will play much more strongly for women than for men. And it’s not particularly deep material either. But it’s fairly pleasant and the cast looks like it’s having a good time playing off each other. Past that, the series has a tendency to draw in some really interesting guest cast – including James Franco as the doctor who replaces Mindy in the opening two episodes, Tim Daly as one of Mindy’s MANY prior boyfriends, and best of all, Tim Olyphant in a cameo that made me rewind to be sure I had really seen him… Fans of the show, who are likely synonymous with fans of Mindy Kaling, likely already have this set and are eagerly waiting for the new season to begin on September 17.The DVD set includes all 22 episodes of the 6th season in anamorphic picture and 5.1 sound, along with a gag reel and deleted scenes for most of the episodes.

Video Rating: 3.5/5 3D Rating: NA

The Mindy Project: Season 2 is presented in an anamorphic 1.78 transfer that shows off a clear picture and accurate flesh tones. As usual, this is a perfectly acceptable standard definition presentation of the series, matching how viewers without HD reception will have seen the show.

Audio Rating: 3.5/5

The Mindy Project: Season 2 is presented in an English Dolby Digital 5.1 mix that focuses on the front channels, as one might expect with this kind of dialogue comedy. As we have heard before, the mix certainly is clear and the dialogue is easy to understand.

Special Features Rating: 2/5

DISC BY DISC:As I regularly do with TV series sets, I will use the Special Features section to describe what can be found on each disc, in order. The deleted scenes are all presented in anamorphic picture and 2.0 sound. These scenes can be accessed via the appropriate episode or via a “Play All” option for all the scenes found on each disc. There are chapters to each episode, but they are not in any menu, so you wind up needing to jump through the episode blindly to get back to a specific point.DISC ONE:Episodes: all my problems solved forever, with a deleted scene (1:22) – The season begins with Mindy off an a new adventure in Haiti. Predictably, she winds up being airlifted back to the regular setting of New York, thus saving the production the need to establish completely new sets. James Franco is featured as the new OB/GYN in Mindy’s absence.the other dr. l, with deleted scenes (4:16) – James Franco is featured again, as Mindy deals with him to try to get her former patients (and everything else) back.music festival, with a deleted scene (0:57)magic morgan, with a deleted scene (2:07)wiener night, with a deleted scene (1:38)bro club for dudes, with deleted scenes (4:31)sk8r man, with a deleted scene (1:20) – Here’s the episode featuring Timothy Olyphant. See if you can recognize him…you’ve got sext, with a deleted scene (1:42)Disc One contains the following Special Feature:Previews – Here is a collection of previews for other television series available on DVD from Universal: The Office, 30 Rock, Jarhead 2: Field of Fire, House, Suits, Covert Affairs, Royal Pains and Monk.DISC TWO:Episodes:mindy lahiri is a racist, with a deleted scene (1:01)wedding crushers, with a deleted scene (1:16)christmas party sex trap, with a deleted scene (1:17)danny castellano is my personal trainer, with a deleted scene (1:39)l.a. with deleted scenes (3:58)the desert, with a deleted scene (2:12)french me, you idiot (Part 1), with a deleted scene (154)indian bbw (Part 2), with a deleted scene (1:45)DISC THREE:Episodes:be cool (Part 1)girl crush (Part 2), with a deleted scene (2:05)think like a peteran officer and a gynecologist, with deleted scenes (2:52)the girl next door, with a deleted scene (0:30)danny and mindy, with a deleted scene (2:14).Disc Three contains the following Special Feature: Gag Reel (12:02, Anamorphic) – Just over 12 minutes of blown takes are included here for fun. One memorable bit has Tim Daly tasting some REALLY hot cooking…

Overall Rating: 2.5/5

The Mindy Project: Season Two is a nice collection of the last season of the NBC romantic comedy starring Mindy Kaling. The picture and sound quality of the discs is just fine. There’s not much in terms of special features, other than some deleted scenes and a gag reel, but fans of this series are likely to simply enjoy the convenience of having all the episodes in one place. Fans of the series have probably already picked this up, in anticipation of the Season Three premiere on September 17.
