Its a little early I know but I have so many Christmas movies now that I have to start real early. Just saw "A Christmas Carol" with Patrick Steward. Loved it of course as he is a great actor.

My favorite version of that story is, call me uncultured, The Muppet Christmas Carol. The Muppets are fantastic, and Michael Caine as Scrooge is able to make us believe it's perfectly normal to have a world filled with talking/singing/dancing frogs, pigs, penguins, rats, vegetables and whatevers (ex: Gonzo). That alone proves what a great actor he is.

Love Christmas movies, will be watching these BD's (some, several times) this year:

The Bishop's Wife
Christmas in Connecticut
White Christmas
Holiday Inn
A Christmas Carol (George C Scott version)
Miracle on 34th Street (Edmund Gwenn version)
Scrooge (Albert Finney)
The Holiday (not technically a Christmas movies, but set during the season and one my wife and I enjoy a lot)
Love Actually
It's a Wonderful Life

Probably forgetting a few but these are the ones that pop into my head.....

Inasmuch as this is in TV on DVD section, I'll add something TV:

The Gathering, with Edward Asner, Maureen Stapleton, Lawrence Pressman, Veronica Hamel, Gregory Harrison, Stephanie Zimbalist, Edward Winter, Bruce Davison, Gail Strickland, Rebecca Balding, John Randolph -- not to mention a music score by John Barry.

There was a sequel (imaginatively titled The Gathering, Part II) with much the same cast minus Asner, whose character had died by then, plus Efrem Zimbalist Jr. It was all right, but not as good as the first.

Whoops...sorry about that. I see the headline post but sometimes miss (don't pay attention to) the forum topic itself.

I always start my Christmas viewing with The Polar Express. On "The National Day of INSANITY" (The Day after Thanksgiving) of 2005 I bought a 53-Inch HDTV from Circuit City, along with a DVD of the movie. The set was delivered that afternoon, and the movie was the first thing we saw. Thus began a Tradition. As the season moves along I watch the "Minor League" Movies Monday to Thursday (Daytime as well, watching the "Mill Creek" Collection by day, and other obscure movies on evenings), and watch the Major Ones such as National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, The Santa Clause, Home Alone 1,2 & 3, A Christmas Story, Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Both the Movie and the Animated Special) and Jingle All The Way on Friday to Sunday. On Christmas Week I watch the 1953 "Alastair Sim" A Christmas Carol on December 20, The 1984 "George C. Scott" version of the same movie on December 21. On December 22 I watch the original Miracle on 34th Street, and finally the grandaddy of the bunch, It's A Wonderful Life on December 23. (No movies are watched on Christmas Eve, I spend all evening "Church Hopping"). :thumbs-up-smiley:

PS On New Years Eve (During the Daytime) I watch The Poseidon Adventure, because it took place on New Years Eve.

I'm a big fan of Scrooge (Albert Finney), I don't really like any of the other A Christmas Carol movies (old or new).

My other top Xmas movies/shows:

Elf
A Christmas Story
Charlie Brown Christmas
It's a Wonderful Life
A Mircacle on 34th Street (only the B&W Natalie Wood version)
The Grinch (cartoon)

These I make sure to watch each year. I'm sure there may be a couple others that I can't think of right now.

There are actually a lot of anime Christmas shows and even some Power Rangers ones. I once watched a bunch for a Holiday Challenge on DVD Talk. I'll point some out as it gets closer to the holidays.

Closer to home, Henry Louis Gates Jr. once wrote an Op-Ed piece in The New York Times about a Christmas episode of "Amos 'n' Andy" that he and his family used to watch every year at Christmas time at his home in West Virginia in the 1950s. What impressed him most was that it presented a large, thriving, prosperous black world, where fathers could go to a massive department store, staffed entirely by black workers and managers, and buy black dolls for their children, a luxury denied to Gates and his family in their poverty-stricken neck of the woods. Gates described how he got hold of a tape of that episode and unsuccessfully tried to get his daughters to watch it. Fascinating article if you can find it.

Something about watching Christmas episodes when it's not Christmas or even close. Like in August or September. I mean, I love that!

A few days ago I watched Bewitched "A Vision of Sugarplums" because it happened to be the next one in line. Very good episode for Montgomery, she really shines with Mumy (as an orphan). Everybody else in the thing (including dopey Darin!) get tired of trying to please the boy but Samantha is patient and says the right things, and the trip to the North Pole didn't hurt either! I was left feeling happy even though I had watched it over lunch and had to go back to yucky work after.

As most of you know 0n the Friday after July 4 I commence my annual "Christmas in July" week. On the day before Thanksgiving I'll break out my copies of The Hideaways, & The Greatest Show on Earth. (These used to be staples on this day, alas none of the stuff they show these days tickles my fancy). :(

On Thanksgiving (After the Dinner has been finished and all the guests and relatives have left I'll fire up my old VCR and watch two more Thanksgiving Staples (That they don't show anymore) The Mouse on the Mayflower & Plymouth Adventure. Let the Holiday Season Begin!

Perhaps you'll be interested in this thread I had started:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/333168-christmas-films-blu-ray-wishlist/

By the way, I love Muppet Christmas Carol too, but i refuse to buy the Bluray because it has a deleted song that I really liked.
I know it was for the TV version, but this is the only version I have seen of a movie and can't compromise with anything less.
