Is it possible to use 6 ohm speakers on a receiver that is 8 ohms. The speakers will be used for rear surround left and rear surround right. Thanks

Simple answer, Yes.

Technical answer, it depends on the stability of the amplifier, the actual impedance curve of the speaker, not just the nominal rating and so on. A speaker can have odd dips and spikes in impedance at different frequencies, though this is rarer now in my experience than it used to be especially with Zoebel impedance equalization in speakers.
