I have the opportunity to purchase a Vidikron Vision Model 50 from a friend. I understand these were made in 2006 and the unit is still in great working order. My friend is wanting 3d which I don't care much about. My question is if I wanted to spend around $1000-$1500 could I buy a far superior model to this? We want to watch blu ray movies and HD basketball games on the unit. I have the opportunity to purchase this Vidikron for $250. I am ok with passing up the deal if the picture quality will be that much more intense on a newer model. I usually buy my AV equipment from best buy and saw several nice units in the $500-$1500 range. The room is a basement with a 25x25 area with 9 foot ceilings. I want to ceiling hang my unit. Also didn't know if there is such thing as a lamp/lens upgrade that would bring this unit up to par with the newer ones. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Something like the projector below will do better for you, don't waste money on the Vidikron.

http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-W1070-1080P-Theater-Projector/dp/B00A2T6X0K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409675512&sr=8-1&keywords=benq+w1070

If you wanted tp spend a couple of thousand you might be able tp pick up the Sony VPL HW40 after Cedia 2014 finishes, the only negative thing i can say about the Benq ( for the money it costs ) is that it uses DLP link for 3D, in my opinion that's inferior to RF, if you wanted to view 3D i would recommend getting the Optoma ZF2100 DLP link glasses as they have been tested with the Benq and they don't suffer from the DLP link flashes and red tints on blacks unlike some of the other glasses out there.

The Benq also blows away the Epson 2030 for picture quality and 3D viewing.

I also recommend calibrating the unit but the Benq is pretty good out of the box compared to some models.
