The Big Sleep is coming to DVD on September 23 by Timeless Media & Shout Factory.

Farewell My Lovely has never been released on a R1 DVD. It's currently owned by Lionsgate and they don't seem keen on issuing a DVD or blu-ray. The best we'll likely get is what they're offering via Amazon Instant and possibly other streaming services.

I was able to get a nice HD version off of cable a few years ago (Showtime or Starz) of FML. Made a terrific DVD-R

Farewell My Lovely has been on DVD; I could have sworn I've got it downstairs, and I'll look for it later this morning. His modernized The Big Sleep I think I also have. Seems like both were presented open matte.

If they haven't been released before, they should have been!

Sad that The Big Sleep is only coming on DVD.....it would look much better on BD, as it's one film that Michael Winner directed with some sense of visual style (the opening drive to the General's house, etc).

Farewell, My Lovely also deserves a BD; I saw it in "HD" on one of the Starz/Encore channels just last year and it looked pretty good.

Yes, I already have both of these Mitchum movies on DVD, released by Pioneer/Artisan. Would new releases be transferred in the correct aspect ratio?

Kinda off-topic but it does involve Shout's release of "The Big Sleep".....

I have become very disappointed in Shout Factory's releases (or lack thereof) on BD. They bought rights to the ITV catalog and have only released a few on BD (Shout at the Devil, The Eagle Has Landed), but have released a slew of them as DVD only releases (I believe "The Big Sleep" is part of the ITV deal). Other titles in the ITV deal are "On Golden Pond", "Capricorn One", "The Boys From Brazil", etc and I'm starting to wonder if Shout will ever release BD's of these titles.

Forgot about those old Artisan releases. Long OOP (except for bootleg knockoffs). I believe those were P&S, correct?

The Big Sleep should be the right aspect ratio. Can't find any info anywhere on those DVD specs, but I preordered it. I will return it if they just ported the old DVD transfer with incorrect OAR.

I finished my review assignment early this afternoon which gave me time to put in Farewell, My Lovely and watch it all. It's open matte because I let my player zoom it to 1.78:1 and apart from a shot or two which seemed a little tight, it framed perfectly.

I made a copy of the HD version too and think it still looks fabulous--one of my most prized films. If this were released on blu I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I have the US and UK DVD releases and thought both were dark with too muted colors. The open matte transfer doesn't bother me.

I enjoy Farewell My Lovely far more than The Big Sleep probably because the former was set in the 1940s while the latter was set in the 70s (and also shot in London--an inadequate substitute for Chandler's Los Angeles)

I remember when Mitchum went on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson to promote THE BIG SLEEP and Carson basically asked him whey they updated Marlowe and put him in London instead of L.A. and Mitchum responded, "Mine not to reason, just do it and collect."

He also did a clever parody of his character on Saturday Night Live which is around on the net.

You can get Boys From Brazil on Blu from Amazon for $18.66. It's an all-region import.
