A digital bit is a digital bit. Improperly shielded coaxial can pick up interference and optical can be "cloudy" and break if bent too sharply so neither cable is perfect.

Coax is cheaper and provides a more solid connection. (Plus, I can easily plug it in groping around the back of my receiver!)

So I think optical was their "warmup" to screwing us with HDMI; therefore coax wins.
