Good day gents,

Finally time to throw my LG home theatre in a box in the garbage and get something good.I have my 5.1 speakers picked out but for a receiver I am lost. I was thinking a Denon avrx4000. Or should I get a cheaper receiver and then buy a separate amp? It seems these new receivers are lying about their power outputs and that is a concern. Are all these new receivers all this weak? and do some have better components than others?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Speakers are usually the hard part, receivers are easier. What speakers do you have and what is your room size? Most times receivers come down to features you want/need. But if you're driving 4 ohm speakers or have a large area to fill, then you may have to be more concerned with power.

They "lie" about it because most people think it makes a difference and therefore base their AVR choice on the wattage numbers moreso than any other specification/feature of the AVR. This is totally bass-ackwards.

The truth is - choose your speakers wisely and you won't need much power. As has been said many times on this forum, up to half your total system budget should go to speakers alone. The rest can be divided up for everything else - display included.
