It looks like Universal UK will release Glen A. Larson's original Battlestar Galactica (1978-1979) series on Blu-ray at some point in the future. No release date has been set at this time, but Amazon say the set will have 9 discs, and the current pre-order price is £49.00, which is £40.83 after VAT removal for ordering to the USA.

This is not to be confused with the previous German release, which was licensed from Universal by Koch Media in Germany, and Region B locked. These discs are highly likely to be region-free, as they are from Universal.

Universal has been on a roll releasing US TV on Blu-ray in Europe and Japan. Recent or announced releases include the complete series of House M.D., USA Network's Suits (in Europe), and Larson's original Knight Rider series, which has currently been announced only in Japan.

went and checked amazon uk site, and will play a wait and see game on this, but did notice something that no one has mentioned, even on the normal pre release art for UK release there is always those annoying ratings logos on the front, oddly enough they are not present on this..... maybe this will be more inline with the way the Hitchcock Masterpiece or Monsters Collection was released both there and here at possibly the same time?

I tried watching this series again.. But that damn warbling, eye-watering instrumental and vocal music they start up with seemingly every 3rd scene is really annoying, where it wasn't on first viewing..
Odd..

Or, more likely, that is just temporary artwork knocked up in a hurry to have something on retailer websites. It probably hasn't been sent to the BBFC for classification yet (not sure if the episodes would have to be resubmitted/recertificated or not as they'd obviously be from different masters than the DVDs).

I will be more curious about which extras are on this. When the DVD set came out, several of the extras on the US set went AWOL on the UK one, so I'd definitely want to be sure that the complete deleted scenes package is on the discs (and preferably in HD, so that they wouldn't suffer from PAL speedup).

All that being said, I will still probably play wait-and-see on this. Given that first Germany and now the UK have released this on blu, surely, surely the US market will follow (hopefully with at least all of the extras from the previous release, though new extras would also be most welcome!).

Very clever on Universal's part. They got me to purchase the recent DVD re-release (with DVD-9s), saying there were no plans for a Blu-Ray release. And here we are. Triple dip coming up.

I bought this on DVD many years ago. As nostalgic as the show is for me, and as good as the soundtrack is, the quality of the actual episodes simply isn't high enough for me to double or triple dip. I will always love the original BSG, but not because it was a well-written show.

The German set is excellent, but I hope they fix a glitch in Gun on the Ice Planet Zero part 1 for the UK release. The master from which the transfer was derived on the German set apparently has a couple of scenes in the incorrect order. There is a scene in which Starbuck and Apollo discuss the fact that Starbuck was selected as one of the landing crew, and the next scene has Starbuck rigging the computer so he will be selected for the landing crew. Since this second scene does not seem intended to be a flashback, it appears these 2 scenes are out of sequence.

I knew it'd have to happen eventually, after both Germany and the UK put it up for release.

Though I'd really like to see even more extras than on the original DVDs (the blooper reel, as well as more behind scenes footage would be especially nice, as would any deleted scenes that got left out last time), I guess we'll just be lucky if they port over everything that's on that original set (and then, it'd probably still be in SD, too).

The sadist in me is hoping they include GALACTICA 1980 and make it a truly complete set. GALACTICA 1980 showings will become the new Guantanamo torture method to replace waterboarding.

IF they did, they could at least restore the original title sequence to the episodes (so they actually say Galactica: 1980 on them rather than Battlestar Galactica).

Well since I am the ultimate Galactica fan (who despises that other entity completely) I have hoped we will see it come to Blu-Ray in the US. Glad to hear it will happen!

I also hope it includes G:1980. I didn't have fond memories of that show from 1980 until it came to DVD. But then I watched the DVDs and found they were not nearly as bad as I remembered. I found myself enjoying them!

I agree about 1980. I believe it will be in the set. I enjoyed the Return of Starbuck and the night the Cylons landed. I also like when they bomb Hollywood. The rest I could take or leave. I hope we get the German set which included the 4 combined episodes into two movies and I think they had more bonus content but not sure on this. There was also a video game that came out when I bought the huge Cylon head DVD set. I should think the game based on the orginal series is very hard to find now. I always wished I had bought it.Syfy also put out a special on BSG when they were airing the reruns of the show. I recorded it but would love to have that in the set.

Here is the game that I spoke of. I see ebay has many for sale.

The 2003 Battlestar Galactica mini-series inspired a video game for Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox in which the player plays as Commander Adama as a younger man, and flies a number of missions in different craft against Cylon ships, following Adama's career during the First Cylon War. Though presumed set in the continuity of the 2004 reboot, the visuals were based on the designs of the original 1978 series and like the original series, the game featured alien races and their technologies even though no aliens or alien technologies were ever suggested to exist in the 2004 continuity. The game also features the voice talents of Dirk Benedict as Lieutenant Starbuck and Richard Hatch as Captain Apollo, though both characters were hidden content available only through the use of cheat codes and did not feature in the storyline of the main game. It was developed by VU Games and Warthog Games

I have also put this out before. What would season 2 have looked like.
