My old college system was a Kenwood KR-V8040, 1992 model. Until today, I can run it at high volume for an extended period, and feel no discomfort laying my hand (or my baby's butt) on top of the unit. Very little temperature diff can be felt.

My new system is not the same. The top is hot as hell. I've been told this is because today's components are made of cheap materials that don't cut loose of their heat fast enough. Dunno.

Questions: 1) Does your amp feel hot on top at high volume?
2) Do I need to install a fan ?
3) My old Kenwood had 2 power receptacles built in so I could power on the unit, and it would power on my EQ or whatever else I had plugged in. My brand new corporate POS doesn't have that. So, if I plug in a fan, what are the options ?

Thanks in advance.

My AV Receiver is a Yamaha Aventage line and doesn't run that hot, now if you run all your speakers as large it might be a different matter since that would put more strain on the amp section but i have a good subwoofer for low frequency duty so don't, so no it runs warm but not too hot, my old Sony ran quite hot, in fact i could fry an egg on that, that was an STR-DB930 model

I have a Yamaha RX-V477 running two Energy CB-20 Bookshelf fronts with a Klipsch SW-350 sub. The receiver max volume is set to 97. I frequently run it around 70-75 and after about 20 mins it gets so hot you cannot hold your hand on it at all.

I also noticed when I bought it it did not have a fan. My old Ramsa WP9110 has a fan and I do not recall it ever getting as hot as my current receiver.

After doing some reading on various HT forums, it appears that alot of the new generation of receivers do not have fans and are designed to run hot.. You just have to make sure you have good clearance around the receiver so it can breathe.

It still seems way too hot to me and have considered buying a cooling fan to put on top of it. For now I will wait. I have had no issues with its performance to date.

AVR stopped having power outlets 10 years ago. Most moder BD, streaming devices etc aren't designed to have their power cut off anyway. As far as heat. They get hot. My DTR 7.8 (even more powerful than the 905) is a camp stove.Let it get hot. Just don't set anything on top, or on the right side next to it. Air inlet is on the right side.

Thanks guys.

As an afterthought, these new receivers are handling more load and doing a lot more processing. I do like the idea of mounting a fan (in simple fashion, without cutting anything).

Al, how do you have yours mounted? I was considering just adding a fan right on top of the grill, not blowing into the unit tho. Of course, with actual air flow, dust will collect inside the unit, which isn't good either. If I do, I'll have to remember to blow it out every few months.

I may just let it go. Like's been said, if they're designed that way. ;) These things have changed so much since I bought that Kenwood. I notice things different & get all freaky about it. :D

My receiver is on a shelf in a large closet. I just mounted the fan on the top of the shelf to blow air out (toward the main room). It doesn't "directly" cool the receiver, the idea was just to move any collection of hot air out of there.
