Not only has it never been released on Blu-ray, the DVD is 14 years old and NON-ANAMORPHIC. There's a long thread about this over in the Blu-ray forum.

This hasn't had a proper release on Blu-ray yet, has it?
Unfortunately not. The DVD is non-anamorphic 4x3 from the laserdisc master, so this current HBO copy (which played on Cinemax earlier in the year), is probably the best it's ever looked for home viewing.

Is there a clear, known reason why this has been shafted on DVD and BD?Has Cameron held it up because he wants to do a remaster or something but he just hasn't had time?

I'm not sure if it's a contractual obligation or a courtesy to the filmmaker by the studio, but the hold up has been that Cameron wants/needs to approve the master for a disc. There have been some rumors posted on other threads here and on the Digital Bits website that he may get a chance to look at the masters this fall before shooting starts on the new "Avatar" movies, and if that happened, maybe we'd see discs for this (and "True Lies") next year.

Thanks. I figured it was something like that.

Considering how Cameron raved about the technological breakthroughs in 'The Abyss' (I suppose that's true with everyone of his films), and the box office success of 'True Lies', it's a little dismaying that he hasn't pushed through an approved BD for both films. I think he has a bad case of ADHD that prevents him from staying focused on a project once he thinks it's complete. The man is brillant, complex, but at time exasperating.
