Harlan Ellison was involved in the first season, until he went all Harlan and left.

Season 3 (and possibly two) had J. Michael Straczynski onboard as writer and producer.

So, the show has a decent enough pedigree to it. But, it didn't have a Rod Serling guiding it, so while good, it doesn't quite measure up to the original Twilight Zone.

/it's much better than the 2002 version, though.

I got all three versions of TZ (Original, 1985 and 2002) for  HALF PRICE  a number of years ago when Deep Discount had a BOGO Sale of TZ and The Outer Limits (Original). One of the best bargains I ever had!

Yes, the original is the best hand's down, but the other versions are pretty good as well. You can see how the quality of TVshows has headed south over the years from watching all three versions. The original had episodes lasting 25 to 26 minutes, The 1985 version has episodes running about 22 - 23 minutes each, while the 2002 version has episodes that run 21-22 minutes each. :(

80's Twilight Zone only has a marginally decent reputation amongst the fandom, if only because it looks modestly better in comparison with the revivals that came immediately before (the awful movie) and after (the awful UPN version).
Basically the problem is the new shows were more or less revivals of Outer Limits and not the Twilight Zone. And Outer Limits is and remains the most unnecessarily cynical anthology show ever.

although, it does seem as though the main reason it had problems is that viewers wanted a revisit of the original

i may have as well, at time of original airing

but if one approaches the show without those expectations, i wonder how one might find it ?

It's been a long time since I've seen either remake series but I remember the first season having some legitimately good episodes, the second year having a big drop off but still having the occasional OK episode and the unbelievably cheap-looking third season & the 2000's series being pretty terrible.

As for the movie, I like the It's A Good Life & Nightmare At 20,000 Feet segments and the Aykroyd/Brooks bookends. Even trying to not to think about the real world deaths in the Vic Morrow segment, it's still only an average tale. I didn't care for Kick The Can in the series and Spielberg- who I think is a legitimate cinematic genius- doesn't save it in the movie either.

For the 'new' series, I always enjoyed Its Still A Good Life.I kind of thought it would have been a good extra on the original TZ collection.

Yeah, it was fun to see those characters again. In all fairness to the 2000's series, I'm sure there were some decent episodes that I'm not remembering but they were few and far between.

They had a clip of It's Still A Good Life on the DVD set but dropped (probably due to licensing) on the Blu-rays.

I didn't totally enjoy these newer TZ to be honest when I first saw them, I would prefer to see a release of the 1980's Alfred Hitchcock Presents such a shame fi that one stays in the vaults. It had a grittiness to it the much slicker TZ didn't, in my opinion.

I already have the 80s TZ season sets, which came out about ten years ago if I recall correctly. The episodes haven't aged nearly as well as the original Zone, but the first year still has some good stuff. Watch particularly for the commentaries by Harlan.

thanks.

probably a similar license agreement like bear family

they can sell so many, and that is it, until a new license.

do you know if this transfer went back to the original film ?

they have been doing pretty well with this now, after much complaints.

but if these are actually from transfers of 10 years ago, they may not be originals ?

btw, did you get your moniker from the original tz episode ?

it was one of the "deepest" tz episodes - so i liked it a lot.

people seem to remember burgess meredith in the glasses episode.

but i found that one only somewhat interesting - irony without much depth behind it.

whereas obsolete man - gosh one could watch that several times and still glean new ideas from it.

TZ 85 suffers from the same issue as so many 1980s and 1990s shows... shot on film, edited on videotape. So, the transfers made 10 years ago are about as good as it will look. And since this is just a reissue, I doubt Image would go back to the original videotape masters again.

And since TZ 85 isn't TNG, or the X-Files, I definitely don't see anyone ever going back, re-editing and redoing the effects to make it HD.

/ yeah, the screenname is from the original series TZ episode.

i am not so concerned about hd and pq - for me, dvd is good enough for me to thoroughly enjoy a show that i like.

but it sounds to me from what you said, that these originally came from the originals, not syndicated or cut versions ?

as long as i can get it complete, i am happy with dvd quality.

I think Phil DeGuerre mentioned somewhere that the original 35mm negs of New Twilight Zone no longer survive anyway.
