I watched Warner's Young Man With A Horn recently and realized that all three leading actors are still living- Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall and Doris Day. As this film was released 64 years ago, I was wondering if it's the oldest film where the top two or three leads are still living or if there are any that are older. Great film BTW, with a haunting theme, Melancholy Rhapsody, played by Harry James for Kirk Douglas.

Yes I think this is one of the (very few now) classic films where all three principal stars are still with us. And it's a great film besides.

Something else to note is of the three, Douglas and Bacall both have Honorary Oscars. I hope that Doris Day gets one as well before it's too late. I think this might be her year for an Honorary Oscar.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

Also, if she were to get an Honorary Oscar, perhaps she could appear on the Oscar ceremony to present Best Original Song next year. Cue "Que Sera Sera", have Doris Day come out, instant standing ovation...

Doris is very happy out of the spotlight, living with her animals in Carmel (such a pretty spot), but her fans have nevertheless been campaigning for years to secure Ms Day an honorary Oscar. She has started making more appearances lately, though, such as her recent birthday celebration, and she recorded an audio segment to accompany TCM's Rock Hudson "Star of the Month" promo.

Let's try the Blu-Ray section. I think there's more classic movie discussion there than in AHL.

From what I understand, Doris has been offered an honorary Oscar and has turned down the honor. I can't think of anyone any more deserving than she is. I hope that's just a rumor and that she would accept if one were offered.

From what I've read over the years the Academy wants Doris to appear in person to receive an honorary Oscar but she prefers to be remembered as she was. The Academy should have given her the Oscar when she was still making appearances-Doris turned up in person to accept a special Golden Globe in 1989-looking fabulous. Shame on the Academy for waiting too long to offer Doris the honor. The Academy has a long history of waiting too long to honor older actors-Myrna Loy and Edward G. Robinson come to mind. I believe Edward G. died before he got his. And now Oscar nominated performers are cut from the tv "In Memoriam" segment to make way for publicity flacks and the like. Very tacky.

What if they offered to fly to her and give her an honorary Oscar at her home and record the event there? Would she accept? If so, they'd be fools not to want to do it.

That's what they did with Myrna Loy, who was quite frail when receiving her honorary Oscar.

Yes, I agree that Ms. Day is worthy of this type of consideration and treatment at this point in her life.

There were recent pictures of her published and she looks really good, very healthy.

Perhaps she isn't interested in a consolation prize and will let her work speak for her. It's about time Calamity Jane, Love Me or Leave Me, and Teacher's Pet were released on blu-ray.
If she were interested, she'd drive to Hollywood or take a train to Washington. She doesn't care. She's like Garbo. She wants to be left alone. I think the only reason she made that token appearance lately is to ward off those "tragic last days" stories in The National Enquirer. I'll bet that's also why a tech-savvy assistant got her an official website.

For some years now, I've been hoping that The Academy would show a clip from YOUNG MAN WITH A HORN, and then bring outthe three stars. I know it's not gonna happen, but can you imagine how long that Standing O for that would go on?

ps: My other wished for ... and now too late ... hope was for a clip from MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, preceding the entrance of Olivia and Mickey.
